Chatter at start up E-flight
« on: July 09, 2024, 06:46:30 AM »
Anyone else experience this?
Castle ESC, FM9 timer.

Sometimes when I press the start button the prop chatters instead of spinning.
Not all the time, but most of the time.

Paul,
This seems to happen when the motor rotor is at a between point as it starts. It kinda bounces back and forth as it gets its direction sorted out then spins up. Kinda normal thing with any outrunner.

I figured that’s what was happening. I have had a few planes do this.
Not sure if I have see this with a BA setup.

Bob - sounds like a story needs to be told. 😝

I have several BA35xx's on Spin ESC's and they all do it most of the time.  Don't recall it happening on my Cobra motors.

you can try changing start-up rate.  Try slowing it down.

Brushless motors need to "find" the poles; sometimes the control does that.  I would see it on industrial SPM motors.

Also, check your connectors.  it is easy to have the shrink tubing on the bullet connector prevent the connector from fully seating.  Its easy to miss.

I've seen it chatter with the prop going backwards but it's not a clean spin up so I know it's ok.

I don't see it with the equipment I use now.
But, I used to see it a lot with the E-flite 32 and the Castle ESC.

Paul, on some Castle ESC’s, you can select the type and number of poles for the motor. This helps with start up.

I have set them to the correct number of poles.

The Plettenburgs on the Schultze ESC's never seemed to do it.
The E-Flites on Castles were the worse.
Plettenburgs on Castles did it once in a whole.
E-Flites on Jeti ESC did it far less than other ESC's
Plettenburgs with Jeti ESC rarely did it.
The BadAss motors on the Jeti ESC does not seem to do it at all.

This is just my experience in the last 12 years of running electric motors.

My BadAss 3515 rarely does it on a Jeti Spin 44 pro, but my 3520 does it about half of the time on a Jeti Spin 66 pro.  I have never has a bad run or fail to start as long as it does something.

Were these the ESC's purchased from Igor?

Same. It always works.
Just sounds cooler when it spins up. 🤙🏽
Guess I wanted to make sure it wasn’t something I was doing wrong. 😉

No, Igor does not sell the Pro to my knowledge.  These came from Okie Air.  I currently use the Fiorotti timer and the Jeti Pro works well with it.

Our experience may be different because I ONLY use the modified ESC from Igor.
