This might be or is a dumb question but is the castor oil sold in pharmacy the same oil as used in glow fuel?

Thanks. Just wondering if I can add it to a gallon of glow fuel to run in the older Enya or McCoy engines.

Drug store castor oil can get rather expensive. Probably because of manufacturing refinements. Remember, the pharmacy castor is used for medicinal purposes (Ugh! Foul taste!)

Do mothers still give it to their kids? My mom did!

I've been using this successfully to doctor up high nitro, low oil fuel for my AP .061s, Norvel .074s, and my Cox Reedies:

I've used pharmacy castor oil with complete success. It seems that castor is castor, just varying grades of it. Like olive oil, virgin olive oil, extra virgin, etc. it's all olive oil.

The only place I can get fuel is 37 miles from me. So I went to this shop today for the first time to see if he had fuel and he did. He carry's Byron fuels 15% with 20% oil and he also had Byron Originals lube booster on hand 9 bucks for a 12oz bottle so I got that too. Thanks for the help. I'm now in good shape for more flying.

Hi Billy:

I have been told that one can indeed use olive oil in our fuels! It may not be as good as castor oil but will work just fine! It is used around the world in Diesel engines. Just don't run the engine as hard as one would with castor. Google the two oils and see for yourself.

With the high-detergent action of synthetic oils, I would not be at all concerned with using castor oil from either the drug store or Wally World to boost the lube percentage. I might not want to run fuel with 100% castor over the long term, but a gallon or two wouldn't be a problem. If it was, a few runs of all-synthetic fuel would get rid of any accumulations of muck.

At $17.00, actually $16 and change and less if bought in quantity, a gallon Bulk Apothecary can't be beat. I've used almost 10 gallons of their castor mixing my own fuel and it works perfectly. A lot cleaner than Sig, who bought all Foxes castor. Be sure to tell them to ship without a signature upon delivery.

Bulk Apothecary prices looks good but the shipping cost hurts it. For 1 gallon at my door is 30.00 and for 15oz is 13.50 Im going to stop by Ace hardware today after flying I think I remember seeing it there or Home Depot.

You can look for a shop that supports power sports especially go kart racing they will have it. There is a class that is runs methanol and castor.

The shop also cells methanol so it could get nitro locally I would be all set

Some snowmobile shops, ATV or off road motor cycle shops will have it too.

Like almost everything else, this is not a new subject and has been covered in depth here before. Do a search on it and you'll find a lot of information on what the differences are and the manufacturing processes. . I have used it from the drug store before, and if in a pinch, look in the baking department of the grocery store. Lots of old baking recipes call for castor oil. It's good for when you are in a pinch, but is expensive that way when you need to add 8 or 10 ounces. My older brother used to work in the foam, chemical, and plastic industry and it is used there also. He brought me 5 gallons one time when I was mixing large amounts of mole repellent.One of the differences is in how much it has been refined and degummed. I am of the persuasion that for high oil content needs, some of the total amount should be a synthetic, and Klotz is my favorite. Helps keep the plug and rings cleaner if it's a ringed engine and less varnish build up, which WILL happen over time if you run it a lot and all castor.

The ultimate castor (well, not straight but quite heavily modified) is the Racing Castor 927. It's quite popular in highest level F1C, and those people really care what pil they use.
It burns so clean that some teams mix some benol in it to get that nice light tan to piston top.
I mix it 1:3 with Klotz 189 synthetic. L

Just came from the hardware store. They have a liquid mole repellent that you attach to your garden hose. It is 32 ounces and on sale for $14.99, two dollars off. The ingredients say "Castor oil.....100%."

Hmmm. This may explain a lot of things. At our last race, after I got into a line tangle and crashed, I found a dead mole on my wing. Kind of odd since I crashed on the pavement....but one of the guys sent me a picture, and pictures don't lie....

wood alcohol with 3 in 1 oil to fly C/L. Said the engines ran fine. I don't remember the ratio but I am going to test this in the future, no nitro

straight up methanol and 3 in 1. I have a ratty engine I will try this on. Thanks for bringing up the

subject about castor. I had almost forgotten about this!

On a similar note, the late Gary Frost would make yearly visits to the Philippines to visit his wife's relatives, and took some model stuff to keep there so he could fly on his visits there. He could take just about everything he needed in checked luggage but had to figure out fuel. When he got there the first time, he checked the local stores and found that they carried HEET gas line anti freeze! He couldn't figure out why they had it, but gave that a try in a similar mixture with the SIG castor he packed in his luggage and low and behold it ran OK. Not world beating performance but it started easy and ran OK. Makes you wonder what else might be out there!

On the mole related issue. Mike Willman and his Dad Ray were hot competitors in Carrier during the 60's , 70's, and 80's and did a lot of engine testing and break in in their back yard. When the participation fell off, after a few years he discovered moles in his back tad one day. I remembered hearing about castor being a good mole repellent so he broke out an engine he wanted to test run and the old trusty test stand that was sorta low to the ground and spent the day running engines. he walked down the runs and said that they didn't come back, so he now mixes up some juice in a pump sprayer and gives his yard a regular dose if he doesn't plan on running engines!

Ok.... they add a little bit of their red dye which is what give Klotz the smell... so, castor with a little bit of red dye and smell good stuff in it ;-)

128 oz / 6 oz = 21.3 X $3+/- =$63+/- bucks a gallon.....wow!.....pharmacy not so gud a deal vs Riches, VP, Torco, Sig, Bulk Apothecary, McMaster, or Tower Castor oil by the quart of gallon

I blend a lot using Sig Castor Sig or Tower Klotz and/or BenOl or Technlube, or UCON LB 625 ( good synthetic I get from Riche's)....

hint #1 no hazmat shipping fees on lubes...
hint #2 Randy Smith sells a very good Aero 1 additive I believe in and it is not expensive
