Brodaks day 4
« on: June 15, 2012, 08:59:49 PM »
Precision Aerobatics entries:
Beginner -10,  Intermediate - 28, Advanced -27, Expert -26

Scale Entries:
Profile Scale -7, 1/2A Scale - 7, Fun Scale - 12, Sport Scale - 5

Back behind the Contest Director's table in the big tent next to the snack trailer were 3 cards to sign and a notebook pertaining to Eddy Elasick. Eddy was a very good stunt flyer back in the 1960's. He started winning contests in 1960. In 1961, he won junior stunt at the Mirror Meet, which was a large contest in New York. Soon after, he won the national Air Youth crown flying a Fox .25 junior Falcon which was designed by John D'attavio. Eddie designed the triple tail Impala in 1962. He was a member of the Garden State Circleburners.

Flash forward to 2012; Eddie is living in Florida recuperating from a couple of bad accidents. If you wish to know more, contact Tom Neibuhr.

I walked over to the combat table and checked the entries;
World War 2 profile combat-6, Speed Limit Combat - 19. There were a lot of combat ships and a lot of combat matches going on all day friday.

I walked around the Beginner and Intermediate stunt pits and looked at the airplanes. The Beginners and Intermediates are the most fun to watch and Judge.

As I walked across the field, I saw a familiar figure. As I grew closer, it became apparent that it wasn't who I thought it was. That was a relief, since the guy I thought it was had passed away several years ago.

Joe Gilobert is doing well. He won .15 carrier with a Bob Reeves designed FJ -4, and placed third in Sportsman carrier with a Bob Reeves designed FJ-4 profile powered by a Thunder Tiger .36.

A Jack Sheeks story:
Jack crashed a Jamison at the VSC, took off the engine, and had his wife throw the airplane  in the trash can which was only 30 feet away.  When she came back, Jack asked her to get the airplane out of the trash as he had forgotten to remove the gas tank. She walked 30 feet, looked in the trash, and the airplane was gone! That same year Jack and Larry Scarinzi were judging Intermediate at Brodak's. Jack saw a Jamison that looked familiar. It was his old Jamison the the intermediate flyer confessed to taking  out of a trash can at the VSC! No, it didn't win Intermediate.

I saw Lineheart Smith's elecric Shark fly. It flew very well!

I heard two foamy combat ships collide; pieces rained down for 20 seconds, and the crowd cheered loudly!

I stopped by the Model Engine Collecto's Association tent and talked to Bill Mohrbacher, the MECA president, Ginger Scarinzi, and Mary Cartier. Bill had a large book about the english FROG company. (flies right off ground) Ginger Scarinzi was reading it.MECA is trying to recruit younger members who would be willing to accept leadership positions.

A new MECA website will open up in the fall, and will cover discussions of all types and nationalitys of model engines. Eventually, an online swap sheet will open up that will be cheaper to use than ebay.

We lined up for the famous Brodak friday feast. A lot of the wives helped Buzz Brodak serve the food. They all wore badges that had BBB on them. BBB means Buzzes Banquet Brigade. The food included BBQ, Chicken, veggies, rolls, fruiut cups, watermelon, fruit and drinks. Larry Scarinzi provided dinner nd entertainment by flying an FAI combat ship.

Junk Yard Wars:

1. Team Absurd - Dan Banjock flew 10 laps, and pulled a string tied to the tail (ala WAM carrier, to slow the airplane down. It went into a flat spin and crashed.

2. Team Cook - Flew a flying wing; flew 10 laps and did a loop and flew inverted, but crashed after another inside loop.

3. Team rootbeard - Flew a flying wing that flew 10 laps then looped, did lazy 8's, flew inverted off a chair, flew inverted, did a 4 leaf clover, and landed.

4. Brew Barons - Did 10 laps, and performed some large manuvers, but crashed while attempting to transfer the pilot to a swivel flying chair.

5. Team Canada wore helmets and rubber boots. The pilot flew 10 level laps and then crashed while attemping an upwind loop.

6. Bean Hill Flyers -Crashed prior to completing 10 laps.

7. The Wrecking Crew- Flew 10 laps, did a lot of smooth manuevers, but the engine quit sooner than it should, and the airplane landed.

The Mass Fly:

All the airplanes were in the same circle. They took off, they all crashed, and the crowd cheered.

It was wonderful!!

Thank you De and Elwyn for all the happenings, pictures and words. De; I loved your play by play of what you saw and heard. It really gave a cross section of all that was going on.
