Old Time Stunt, Carrier, and the Junk Yard Wars.
I walked by the scoreboards around 8 am on thursday. Brodak's runs both Old Time Stunt phase 1 ( no flaps) and Old Time Stunt phase 2. (Flapped) You can only fly one of the two events. Quite a few guys had scratched.( I didn't count them in the number of entries) No, I don't know why they cancelled. Entries in phase 1, - 33. Entries in phase 2, -13.
Elwyn and I walked around passing out some unofficial awards that I had brought from Tulsa.
One was the the Mirror Meet Award, which is a white sun helmet with a black Mirror Meet l decal on the front. In the early days of the Mirror Meet, there were no appearance points given in stunt. So, I gave the award to a well built airplane that flew well, and had a used appearance. The airplane chosen was a Super Zilch belonging to Brad Smith.
The other three were the Aldrich Award, an Aldrich 9-6 propeller given to three OTS Birds which caught my eye.
1. Sleepy Dawson - Sterling F-51 Mustang
2. Bill Mandakis - F&B Viking
3. Chris Keller - Jim Walker Firecat
I walked around and saw a lot of nice OTS airplanes; an Icarus, a A couple of Humongii, a Super Duper Zilch, a a green and yellow Barnstormer, a cream and green Super Clown,
a Go - Devil Junior (full flaps) a couple of ARF Smoothys, two Black Tigers, and a couple of Galloping Comedians. I was told that back in the day, calling someone a galloping comedian was an insult. Why did Red Reinhardt named his design that?
The Brodak food trailer is run by Vickie and Nikki Albert. They do a bang up job! They serve the 50 cent pizza slices, hot dogs, (both naked and dressed) soft drinks and water. Coffee is .30, and donuts and candy bars are available.
I strolled by the tabulating table; the head tabulator is Sandy Bruce. The two tabulators are Ann Noska, and Charley Ward. The pictures for the award placques are taken by Joan Ball. They are well organised and do a great job.
Next to the snack trailer is a nice tent with tables and chairs. It's a nice place to eat your snack, or just relax out of the sun. I saw Windy Urtnowski in the tent giving trimming instructions for a profile to a modeler. Larry Scarinzi showed up and got into a landmark discussion with Windy and a bunch of the guys.
Tom Martin and I went over the hill to watch Joe Gilbert fly his Bob Reeves designed .15 powered navy carrier ship. Joe put in an excellent flight, but pulled the airplane off the deck after landing, which neatly converted a 100 point landing into a 10 point one. His next flight was a good one and he got a 90 point landing. I think that the Brodak contest has helped bring back some interest in navy carrier.
PA stunt judging was held at 3 pm in John Brodaks front yard. I would have written more about the beautiful stunt ships there, but the appearance judges ran us all off. (even Elwyn!)
Elwyn and I went to the Subway to eat about 4 pm. Then we toured the new museum site which is pretty close to being finished. It will have engines displayed on one wall, and a hobby shop in the middle of the big room filled with NOS kits engines and stuff.
The annual memorial service was held at 5 pm and conducted by Allen Brickhouse. He conducted a prayer and read the names of those modelers who have passed since the last Brodaks contest. They are: Clayton Berry, Leroy Ducharme,Dale Kirn,Jerry Leuty,Bill Northrop,Howard Pardue, Walt Prey, David Reyes, and Lance Smith. Josh Harel played Amazing grace on the bagpipes, and Allen lead a prayer to finish the service.
The junkyard wars buildoff started at 5:25 pm. I heard Dan Banjock describe his building philosphy to his crew; "Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, and cut with an axe!" The wrecking crew were building their tried and true design, The Dixie whiz kids were supervised by Jack Sheeks, and Elwyn and I got tired and left. On the way out we had to help Larry and Ginger Scarinzi with a dead battery , which turned into a saga, and thats why this report is posted so late.
