Brodak Nitrate Clear Dope

I was going to order more Brodak Clear Nitrate Dope but I can't find it on their web site. They show Nitrate thinner but only Butyrate clear which is back ordered The first time I used Bro Nitrate I didn't know they had Nitrate thinner so I've used regular Brodak thinner for Butyrate does that make a difference ?? Everything seems to be OK

H-m-m-m    According to folks in the know, there really IS a difference between Nitrate and Butyrate thinners. One of the problems with SIG dopes is that they try to make do with just one thinner for both types of dope. I suspect that you could use Certified Nitrate Clear with satisfactory results, but I can't advise it, just because of possible incompatibility.

Nitrate Dope thins with Acetone. Acetone is readily available in hardware stores. You dont need to spend the big bucks on hobby shop equivalents.

My personal opinion is to use the thinner from the manfacture, other stuff may work but we spend too much time finishing and too many things can go wrong even trying to do it right. Why take the chance for a couple of bucks..

Hi Guys,

The "Blind Hog" here.  I have not bought "model airplane dope thinner" in about 30 years.  I use  the Dupont 3608S thinner in all my dope, Sig and Randolph.  Nitrate and Butyrate.  It seems that if the thinner will "mix" with the dope, and you use the same all the way through, it works.  YMMV.

But, knock on wood, I haven't hd a thinner issue when doing this.  I HAVE had a "retarder" issue, and it was Sig retarder in Sig Bright Red Dope!  (I used too much, and it ate to the bare wood causing lifting when I taped)

Right on with the DuPont 3608S! And, when doping in the warmer months (read higher humidity) DuPont 3602S. This typically eliminates the need for Retarder. It's a slower drying thinner. But don't think that cheaper "Home Depot" types will work as well. They don't. Some won't even clean brushes!

So far, I have not tried the 3602S, but I will.  I *tried* Sig Retarder and really mucked it up.  My fault totally! I just poured it in until it looked right!

Wally World does carry a brand (and it's cheap) that works really well for CLEAN UP ONLY!  It is a green can with a checker flag on it somewhere, and found in the automotive paint section.  It's labeled as "Virgin Primer Grade".  Usually $7-$8 a gallon and will clean spray equipment and brushes quickly.  Some I have bought at Lowes was a waste of time and money.

My vote is for the 3608s. Been using it for years and never had a problem. I use it in both nitrate and butyrate Sig dope. Works well for brushing or spraying. Since it is fairly reasonable, (15.00$) a gallon, I use it for cleanup also.
