Brodak Magician

I have been building a Brodak Magician for the past several weeks. Today I was attaching the wing to the fuselage as per the instructions. The instructions state that the inboard wing be 19 1/8 inches from the last rib to the fuselage. In my case the outboard wing is 19 1/8 inches from the fuse. I built and covered the wing upside down. I guess when I took it off the building board to put the bellcrank in I did it backwards. Boy do I feel stupid. Do I build another wing or take the Skill saw to the outboard wing and make them the same length.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have another Magician kit and may just keep this one around as a reminder..

Before you tear it up, measure both panels and see how close they are to each other.  Would go measure mine to see, but, being lazy i am going to state the following.  Dave Trible who did a few stunt planes and still designing for his self gave me a set of plans with ribs for "The Shameless" profile plane.  The outboard panel is longer than the inboard.  He stated that it helped balance the plane what with everything on the outboard side of the fuselage.  I say it works as it flies better than I do.  So go and mount every thing and hold the plane by the prop shaft and the rear of the rudder and see if outboard wing falls down.  If it does fly it and see how it flies.  Later DOC Holliday

Doc.. The outboard wing is 19 1/8 inches and the inboard is 18 1/4 inch. I will do as you suggest. To much work has gone into it to throw away. Thanks for the help..

Dan,
If it were me, I would remove the last rib on the outboard side move it in enough to have it equal to the inboard side, then cut off the spars, LE, & TE to fit.  You will lose a little bit of wing area, but the airplane sould still fly fine.

If it makes you feel any better you ain't the first to do this, pretty common mistake and almost everyone has been there.

I would fix it.. Can you cut the outboard wing tip off and splice it into the inboard.. Not much stress at the tips and a splice that close to the tip won't cause you any problems.

You could just give the plane to me,OR you can build onto the short wing. Greg Hart did that with his Falcon and it flies fine.

 If I remember right, and this is going back a while, It's about the  size of a Imitation with Flite Streak type wing tips and tail shapes.

Here's a wildcard.  Add one rib bay to the too short inboard wing - I'm guessing the ribs are spaced at about 2", so one more rib bay with restore the wing assymetry.  Like Bob R noted the stress are pretty low out that far and you can add on the span pretty safely.

Your wing span would then be a couple inches longer, wing area a little  larger but that should only help.

Definitely what Bob & Dennis recommended!  That will even give you a bit higher aspect ratio, maybe by a point 0000 something along with more area and that is always a good thing!
