Storing Engines With Glow Plug Installed
« on: February 03, 2008, 06:28:36 PM »
In all honesty, I posted this on SSW also, so if you have already read it, my apologies.

Question: Do you store your engines with plug installed?

I designated yesterday as a "flip n oil" day. That is, I got some engines out, carefully installed a prop chosen for that purpose (not runable), and flipped and oiled them. I try to do that at least once a year for each engine...but not all at one time.  It gives you a chance to inspect the engine and make sure it is not sticking. It also gives you opportunity to reflect on the ships that engine has been in, and the ships you plan to build for it.

I remembered that some folks do not leave the plug in when storing the engines so, just for the heck of it, I removed the plugs of 20 or so, and put them back in their boxes or bags without plugs.

Now I want to clean up these plugs. I was thinking of using mineral spirits but thought I'd ask you guys how you do it. The purpose is to remove any oil or crud, and to preserve the element (without adding "taters" or other impurities).

So far I haven't had a problem with plugs stored on the engine, but I'm sure some lubricants may harm the element. What has been your experience?

I myself have never thought of it.  If I pull an engine out to use that has not been run for awhile hit it with WD-40 or just some fuel to loosen them up.  When the plane engine combo get to the field sometimes I replace the plug, but, most times the plug seems to work okay.  I have had engines that have been in storage for almost a decade if not longer.  I think the big secret is that there is no unburnt fuel left in the engine before storage.  Anyway its my way.  DOC Holliday
