BRODAK MAGICIAN
« on: November 21, 2009, 02:26:25 PM »
OK, couple of questions. First, the plans show an adjustble lead out, but instructions just say you can add, then shows fixed install. If you did add adjustable, would you want to leave line spacing as shown? Or narrow them? Next, plans show complete rudder is offset from centerline of fuse to the edge of fuse at the aft end and sanding fuse on just left side even with rudder. Seems like rudder offset is'nt what it was once thought of. Should I go with plans, or modern ways? Thanks

I usually don't add any rudder off set but go with alittle engine off set instead. I'd just use the Brodak adj. lead out guide and go with the spacing it has.

Thanks Leester, just came in from making the leadout. Kinda nervous cutting through the web/spar for room for it. We'll go with no offset on rudder, maybe add 1/4 oz weight to make up for leadouts.

You could always add a tip weight box, not much to do it.

Been thinking about that. Made one for my magnum, like you said not that hard.

Jack, just as a different point of view. I built my Brodak Magician exactly as plans with the shaped fuse and rudder offset along with a little engine offset. My thinking is that this is mostly a sport flyer and fairly light, I used it in the spring for beginner Pampa and altho it flies great , the wind that day took it all the way across the circle and i was able to save it, maybe partly with the help of the offset.

Built mine box stock, no slider.  Was doing pattern on first flight.

If the engine is broke in, the wing is straight as well as the fuselage.  It is kept light and balanced.  And most of all, followed the instructions, it should be a great little pattern plane.  In the hands of the right person it is a winner.  That is if the judges forget it is a profile and judge the pattern, not the airplane.        I shaped mine as the plans suggested. I feel this is a terrific flying plane. Mine is light and quite fast. I'm flying mine with a LA.25 and a plastic tank with uniflow set up. The plane maneuvers better than any profile I ever owned . I can't see how the plane wouldn't fly well for you.  Its covered in orange Monokote and it looks great with the half ribs. Ken
