Brodak Ares in Primer
« on: February 13, 2009, 06:17:36 PM »
Hi everybody in stuntland!

Here is a couple of pics of my Brodak Ares in Primer.  This is about its 3rd coat of primer.  After sanding it off, comes color.  All Brodak colors, gray, sky blue, and black.

It was sprayed about 10 minutes before these pics were taken and I was too lazy to take it off the wall.

Enjoy!!!  H^^

When you say "in primer" what primer are you talking about.. DupliColor?

If it is DupliColor can you tell me what a coat weighs before sanding? Just wondering how it compairs with a ZS filler coat following Randy's instructions which is 0.9 ounces before completely dry or sanded...

Maybe I should add, this is on a 680 sq/in wing..

I'm not using dupliColor.  I'm using Auto Primer.  This stuff is heavy and most of it is sanded off anyway.

Edit:  Today I sprayed it with a coat of gray.  Also I started to lay out the trim scheme on the plans.

All I can say is, you and some others on here do GREAT WORK! 8)

This is actually only my 3rd kit build and my first I-beamer.  My first plane was an ARF that I bought in 2005, and I still have it.  My next plane was a Brodak profile Fw-190.  Once again I still have it.  In May of 2007, I bought a Smoothie ARC that I put together.  The Ares I started to put together In the winter of 2008.  Flying season came and I got distracted flying.  I got my flying up to advanced.  Starting in about August I started put it together.  Slowly but surely I got up to this stage.

Next week, I will start my Oriental Plus that Bill Hummel gave me.  He also gave me the Ares kit.  Both planes I plan on bringing to the Nats this year along with my smoothie ARC to fly in OTS.

Thanks Bill  H^^

Yes.  I got a coat of grey on, filled the major cracks that showed up and sanded it down.  Then I sprayed the final coat of grey on.  Tomorrow I will start masking for the trim.  I will also post pics tomorrow.

I used regular old Spackle, sanded it down and sprayed over it.  Spackle is water based and takes a long time to dry, but comes off like powder.  It is actually the same material that is on my ceiling at my house.

Matt take this from experience. Spackle will soften with dope (aside from being extremely heavy). So if you use this, spread CA over it in a thin coat to sear it and this will stop the softening. Good luck and keep building.

Have not had any problems with the light weight pre mixed Spackle sold in the little plastic containers.. Sure allot lighter than auto body filler and so far , couple years seems completely compatible with dope.

However, if that blue tape is the stuff I'm thinking it is, it can cause problems with dope.. Look inside the roll and see if it doesn't say something about not using it with lacquer. Dope is a lacquer and the adhesive will attack it.. My experience, before reading the inside of the roll was it left a channel where the tape was, not a complete disaster but irritating.

Here is the Ares ready for clear.  On Saturday, I sprayed the Sky blue,  Sunday I sprayed the wings and fuselage black.  Today I mixed a custom gold to try to get my numbers to look like the Ares decal.  I think I got it pretty close for an amateur.  Right now the Ares weighs 40.8 ounces with everything on it so I think I'm going to reach my goal of 42 ounces for weight.

Enjoy!!!  H^^

Thanks John,  If you look in one of the above pictures, it shows I am spraying with an airbrush.  I prefer to spray with an airbrush, because it is light and I have been using that longer and am more comfortable spraying with it rather than a big spray gun.  I'm actually suprised how quickly the paint went on.

I can't wait to see it fly either.

Mighty fine looking bird right there....I wish I had kept my airbrush...........watching you step by step putting that scheme together makes me really yearn for the good ole days when I was painting car bodies for RC and slots. Although I can't figure out how you get away with doing it in the house like that.....my woman nearly left me over the smell and overspray! Like the others.....I'll be waiting on your flight reports! John, I'm not sure if you can see it in the pictures but the window right above where I was spraying, my grandfather puts an exhaust fan in that he turned around.  When it running at full blast it sucks everything out, even the heat.  The smell is still there and I wonder if our noses have become immune to it.  My grandfather and I don't smell a thing and when my grandmother comes downstairs, she says, "Oh what's that smell? It stinks down here!"

Dennis, I hope it is going to be a winner to.  I did notice though that there is a slight warp on the leading edge of the inboard wing.  I guess a flap adjustment during flight trim could cure that.  This plane is going to the Nats with me this year, but to fly in classic.  I'm going to fly my Oriental Plus that I started 2 days ago for Junior and advanced.  Both should fly great.  H^^

Hey Matt,

You did a "Great Job" on your new "Ares". Like Dennis Adamissin said, I think you nailed it. I think Grandpa and I are going to have to think about retiring if you keep going down the "Path" you're on. Grandpa has certainly been a "Good Teacher".

Looking forward to seeing the two of you at our "Big Jim" Stunt Contest in May. That's the week after "Labor Day" weekend.

Hi Bob

I think the "Big Jim" contest in May is a little after Labor Day weekend. You sure you don't mean Memorial Day???

I don't know about Grandpa retiring, he says he is going to be the next John Dotavio (correct spelling) of the world.  Flying until he's 86 and years after.

I'm not sure we can make it to the Big Jim contest since we're going to the Nats and Lee and Wrentham to defend my title for the Mass Cup.  If we can, I'll be glad.  I would like to go.

Today I finished my Ares.  It weighs 43 ounces.  The cg is actually perfect as well as the vertical cg.  I started with 3/4 ounce of tip weight on the plane.  It is all done except for buffing which I will do next week.  The engine is an OS .35S and a Master Airscrew 10-6 wood prop to start with.  I can't wait to see it fly since it came out soooo well.

enjoy the pics  H^^

Thanks Bryan, but it isn't a perfect Ares, it still has its flaws in the wood, but I still really like how it came out.  If it was appearenced judged at the Nats, then it may be a 14 or 15 maybe a 16.

I can also tell my level of craftsmenship and finishing has gone up since my first kit, a profile Fw-190 to an ARC Smoothie and then the Ares.  My Oriental Plus that I started a week ago, I want it to look even better than the Ares since it is going to be at the Nats for advanced and Junior.

I have been looking at careers that would still allow me to fly these little planes.  I would like to become an airline pilot, so I get to live my passion and still allow me to fly the smaller versions of them.

Matt, get a hold of someone already in the airline business.  I too thought I would love to fly the big birds.  Besides not having the money for the education required I realized I had some physical disabilities also.  This day and age you need at least a college education as well as tons of flying experience.  DOC Holliday

The one thing I would need to do is get in shape, which may take a little bit.  There is a local airport that I think gives out flying lessons, but we don't have the money.  One college in Florida, prefers we have less flight experience before going to college.  I still have time since I'm only a Freshman in High school.

This plane has had a lot of publicity, even before it flies.  Today, I got an email from Bob Hunt, asking if I could write about the Ares in the Appearance Point column.  I also sent Windy a few pictures of this plane, and knowing him, it is on his video.

I do hope it flies as good as it looks.

My next door neighbor flies for Jet Blue, so I could see how he became an airline pilot

Matt, get a scholarship, go to college, and then FLY NAVY.  Lot's of flying hours, real flying. Then apply to an airline. I know many former Naval Aviators that have done this. Fly and get paid. See the world, but to be honest it is a lot of water. H^^ D>K

I have thought about the NAVY, and the Air Force.  How did Dave Fitzgerald become an airline pilot? Or even Ted Fancher (are you out there Dave or Ted)?  Maybe they could chime in on this.
