I've been traveling for work coast to coast and North to South, searched out multiple clubs and flying sites- here's my $0.02
NE - north of Philly / Newark C/L activity is sparse, winters are a bear and taxes... well it is the Empire State.
SE - from VA down to FL there are enclaves of flying- don't get to this area much so I have no 1st hand knowledge, but weather is decent- you are in TN so more in tune.
FL - Tampa/ Clearwater, Cocoa / Melbourne, Jacksonville and Winter Haven all have small groups of active fliers, weather is decent- summers bad- but Oct- April has some fine flying weather. King Orange used to draw pretty good each Jan, but keeping sites is always a problem in FL, and everywhere.
I live in Orlando- but rarely get to fly when home- to many Honey Do's before I head out each time...
Midwest- Chicago, Minneapolis, Fargo(?) all have clubs and an excellent building season..., but up North in mid summer you can fly till after 9 at night. long drives to any contest.
TX, AZ, NM, - Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Tucson, ABQ/ Santa Fe/Los Alamos all have active fliers and clubs. Combat and Stunt, a bit of racing. Great weather, friendly fliers and great food- I hit Phoenix fairly regularly and there are some great guys there- GO TEAM VOODOO!
CA - not on my route.... plenty others can provide the low down.
NW - Except for the 1000% humidity and taxes - CL heaven! Drive Vancouver B.C. through Seattle to The CA border and you will have 1/2 dozen active C/L clubs, world class fliers and builders, great contests. Lots of outdoor recreation, and local seafood, beer, wine, and fruit that will make you fat if you don't get out and fly! I would have moved here a decade ago- but the roots took hold in Florida.
