ARTICLE FROM MAN
« on: February 20, 2019, 11:02:09 PM »
I am looking for an article in the Feb 1976 issue of Model Airplane News. It is titled "Two for the Show". I am interested in the Fokker E-1. Thanks.

I got curious so I looked. You'll find plans for "Two for the Show" here:   https://outerzone.co.uk/oldpages/plan_details.asp?ID=10337

Took a look at the plans and realized I have one in my collection of long unflown models....not a Fokker E1, but a great 1/2A bipe.

   Yes, that was the late, great Lew Woolard and Mike Tallman that were members of the Witchahawks, I believe and did this two man formation stunt routine. The models were a sorta scale Eindecker/Moraine Saulnier and could be built as either. They flew their routine here in St. Louis and several Cardinal baseball and football games and were also part of the group that did demos at White Sox games in Chicago. I bellieve Mime was more or less legally blind! I think he flew "lead" and Lew flew formation to him. I'm sure I have seen L:ew fly this design at many contests over the years. If you have not gotten the article yet let me know.

A friend and I are bringing this back to the circles, this season! Right now, I am building three of the airplanes. Lew told us that the plans from the magazine are not correct; that when the magazine draftsmen re-drew the plans for the magazine, they screwed it up! Lew said that there are people all over the world who are still mad at him for that, but it wasn't Lew and Mike's fault! I have the original airplane, and am taking measurements from it to build airplanes that are like the ones that Lew and Mike flew all around the country!

I will build it. It's gonna be really difficult to find me with an ARF. I know every bit of my airplane!

By the way... Mike was not legally blind. He flew RC Pylon racers in competition, and Wichita hosts the Mike Tallman Legacy Race, in September. As many of you know, he was a potent force in Control Line events, also.

After 3 redos of the plans for one of my articles by a “professional draftsman” who still got it wrong, I learned CAD drafting and never let the final published plan be from anyone but me since!

How hard can it be to simply trace and ink the design of someone who knows what the design should be?

Those who think they know it all are highly irritating to those who actually do!  LL~

I have had the privilege of talking to some of the “masters” and they all have horror stories about the botched job of Kitting a superb design so it “fit in the box” or was “economical”. There are probably good reasons Carl Goldberg started his own company!
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

I remember watching Lew fly one of those in Stunt at a Topeka contest. It flew pretty well.

Mike Tallman saved this original airplane for 43 years, and his lovely wife passed it along to me, because she knows I will treasure it.

    Hi Doug;
    I'm 99 sure I read that some where. This article on the models was not the only thing written about them and their act so it may have been in another article or was referring to another person, perhaps? I wouldn't mind acquiring a set of correct plans if they become available.
