Appearance judging, VSC 2014.....Great!
« on: March 31, 2014, 08:59:01 AM »
Some thoughts after reading another thread gives me cause to throw yet another compliment to the VSC's management this year. "You know....something for the effort". Some of us (contestants) build and finish our vintage planes to museum quality, then take these amazingly beautiful handcrafted models to within inches of the asphalt. These guys deserve their accolades, in spades!

Then, there are some not-so-pretty, not-so-shiny specimens that accurately portray that which we grew up with...nice, well, maybe only "fair", but not "museum" quality planes. In the past, I've seen some really well-executed all-dope, brush-painted, silk-covered, relic- powered airplanes that were scored quite low in the appearance judging. NO complaints from anyone, just an observation.

This year, some of those planes (mine included) got tossed a bone, and I appreciate that! A few points for "period authenticity", ie,  Top Flite/Tornado wooden props, Veco/Banner wheels, Froom/Veco spinners, Champion glow plugs, dare I say, Ambroid-tube tip weights? Certainly not threatening to anyone on the leader board, but still, "you know, something for the effort."

Thanks to ALL who pulled together to make this VSC a really great experience,
dg

Ah yes! Ambroid tip weights were the norm. Some times we used quarters too.

Yeah, I missed another great one.   Maybe I will just go attend with just me and my camera plus the demented poodle.  H^^

Dale; I just gotta tell you, that picture of your Wildman on the other thread is just perfect. I remember back in the old days going from a brush to a vacuum cleaner spray gun. I shoulda stayed with the brush. Now I have a spray gun and three air brushes along with two compressors, and I still brush all my planes. I always say brushing dope is good therapy.
