AMA Plans - 1972 - 1973

Hello All,

I'm new to Stunt Hanger and was hoping some of you older guys out there could help me. The photos included is a 1/2 A scratch built plane I made when I was in High School. I bought the plans from one of the AMA Journals that the plane was featured in. It was in 1972 or 73 (Maybe 1971). I tried to go to the AMA Archrives but they only go back to 1986. If anyone out there has saved AMA Journals dated years 1971, 1972 and 1973 could you please look through them for the article. I wish I could remember the name of the plane but I don't. I would like to build another one. If anyone has a suggestion as to where I might be able to find back issues please let me know.

  That was probably in American Aircraft Modeler if it was 71 or 72. There was an earlier version of Model Aviation that was the official AMA newsletter, but that was dropped and a section of American Modeler carried AMA news and updates. I recognize the airplane and if I get caught up on stuff will flip through the old mags and see if I can dig it up. Maybe a Charles Mackey design??

That is the Charger, designed by Jim Mayfield.  Published in American Aircraft Modeler, October 1970, pages 48, 49.  (AAM was a predecessor of Model Aviation.)  Mayfield was a serious CLPA flyer from Southern California during the 60's.  He really flew well and had well built, well finished super light airplanes.  His designs were related to the Dick Williams' Electra and Bart Klapinski's Tempest.  The AMA plans service does not show this design in their listing.  However, you can probably contact the plans service people there and they will find the magazine in their library and can enlarge the plans from the magazine article.  They do a really good job.

 (Jim one of those who would put lead in belly of his fuselage, like 4 0z or more, to add extra weight so the airplane would fly better.  I moved from California in 1968 so never saw his Charger and do not know how well it flew.)  Jim was a contemporary of Bart Klapinski, National Stunt Champion in 1967.   I know that Bart has seen this airplane fly and he might have even flown it.  Maybe Bart can add some comments here on what he thought of the airplane.
