A couple akromaster questions
« on: January 15, 2011, 01:55:17 PM »
I had a few minutes today and decided to look at my Akromaster kit and have a few questions. I want to put the Brodak jr lightning streak gear on it as I stuffed the hinged gear on my 1/2 a lil Jumpin beans through the bottom of the wings more than once. Looking over older posts I saw someone saying they would use a wire flap joiner/control horn I think you would have to go with a thicker stab and elevator to do this although everyone also says they end up adding tail weight any way so it might be a good idea to add stength while adding weight at the same time. I am going to use a Fox 15X on it and have a Magnum XLS .15 muffler to adapt to it if the fox is to loud . I am looking at different tanks in the 2 oz. size should I go with a uniflow or standard tank? Would adjustable leadouts be worth doing? I saw a posting about a double belcrank mount for strength and am considering that. I was also looking at the plans and a weight box looks easy enough to do as well. I am going to leave the nose the fuse and wings stock length per the plans as I am using the engine it was designed for. Thanks T.J. Ps. dont tell mama I was looking at my plane!

I have built only two Alromasters, the first has a Fox .15X with muffler. It uses a Perfect (now Brodak) normal vented tank. The second has extended wings by using the leading edge and trailing edge full length (without cutting off the ends). You need to make some new wing parts to do that. It is powered by a Thunder Tigre .10, with muffler, using a normal vented tank. If you prefer a uniflow tank, by all means go for it.

There is a lot of room for adjustment in the engine space. If you build light, you might want to move the engine back as much as possible. There is enough room to shorten the nose a bit, depending on which tank you use.

The fuselage and tail section were built per plans. In both planes the included hardware was used. I would suggest using the two wheel LG.

I did not use adjustable leadouts on either plane. Your choice. A tip weight box is nice.

Good luck with it.

Hey George, what prop do you run on your 15X and what fuel does it like? Thanks T.J.

I like an 8x4 prop for that plane. Fuel is 15% nitro, 20%-22% castor. Lines are 52'x.012.

Edit: Additional thoughts...I thought the 15X was a dog when I used an 8x6 prop so don't over prop it. Also, Duke Fox recommended Missile Mist for fuel which, I think, is 25% nitro...so don't be afraid to add more nitro. Play around and see what prop and fuel work best for YOUR engine.

Still have the Akromaster my oldest daughter built many years ago.  Box stock build with Monokote and epoxy.  Engine is the old reliable Medallion .15.  Flys great for her and will fly again when she decides she wants to fly it again.   H^^

I was wondering why some people choose to put a larger belcrank in their Akromasters, up to this point I have only buily 1/2A planes was wondering is this Mod worth doing. Thanks T.J.

I have 2 akros, 1) standard build from kit has an enya 09 in it now. 5yrs old the nose has been off 3 times but the wing never broke its a great begginers or fun plane. I built another after reading posts here with the longer span and i added flaps! It flys great with the flaps a lot smoother nice insides and outsides. This one is powered by an asp.15 or magnum over with you. I dont see the point of a larger bellcrank in an akro, its a small plane. A 4"bellcrank in a .35/.40 sized model is supposed smoother or more controlled response. I use 3 " so I am not qualified to say if this is so. ;D

Regards Brian.

I  set up a small area down at Mom's today to work on the Akromaster it was really weird because it is in the same spot I built my last Lil' Jumpin Bean in 1982 kinda dejavu to say the least. I cut down the leading and trailing edges and glued them together I came to realize you can never have to many clamps! I am really enjoying building a lot more now than when I was a kid, its very relaxing I guess when I was a kid I just wanted to fly. Thanks for all your advice and suggestions over the last year now its go time. Thanks T.J.
