Acrylic over Monokote??

Anyone have any experience airbrushing acrylic over monokote?

This would be for an electric so not too worried about fuel resistances.

I belive it can be sprayed and will hold as most of the paints i have tried, but i doubt it will stay there due to monokote expansion rate x stiffnes of the acrylic paint.
i would shot a 2 part clear over or use 2 part paint instead

Yes you can.
I have twice used rattle can automotive acrylic over monocoat without a problem. But slightly depoloish with steel wool, then a light primer coat- almost just a dusting. Next, a few very light top coats to a gunfinish shine.- you don't really want to hard polish paint over monocoated open bays, other than a light hand buff to avoid stretching the monocoat

From what I read you don稚 want to do that.

I have sprayed a few test pieces and letting them sit for a week or so.
I might do a tape test just for giggles and grins. 🤓

Are you adding color trim or just a clear coat to seal the edges? What brand of acrylic did you use?

It would just be trim.

Ok after letting it set for about a week in a warm humid garage I put some painters tape on both test pieces.
It did not pull up paint. Next test is sitting it in the hot Florida sun. 🌞

Note -the paint is blue and I知 not skilled with the airbrush. But it went green on the yellow monokote. 🤓

You can mix the clear right in the paint with the reducer.

Fingers crossed.  My concern is the neighbors.  I am in an office building and I cannot use smelly anything or ramp up my Dremel before 5:00.  Keep this thread going.  It will be months before I am ready for color.  If this holds up, I will get a cheap airbrush and my "shop" will be full function.  You should have seen the look on the cleaning lady tonight when she walked in and found me brazing a new horn glowing bright orange!

Update
Sat out in the hot humid Florida sun today.
No change in the paint.
Will rub a little sprayquick wax on it later and try and remove some paint.

Welcome to the concept of "cover".  Most paints are at least somewhat translucent -- even white.  This is why you see people using a silver or grey cover coat on their planes before laying down the base color.  Otherwise all the stuff underneath shows through.

You either need to plan your paint colors so they go over the base color, or you need to just use a white (or silver) base color.

Yep I mostly use white. This was just some scrap monokote over some punched out balsa sheet and an old broken stab from a plane. Was just testing if the paint would bond well and it did.

After I rubbed it with some quick shine spray wax very little color came off. I doubt I would ever rub it that hard with wax on the finished paint.
This paint worked better than expected.
