Disaster has strucken! (only sorta, kinda)
« on: November 29, 2010, 05:51:36 PM »
Oh Dear.

Five years ago I built my brand new #2 Grandson a Flite Streak Trainer complete with fancy paint job, etc. and installed a then NIB Norvel AME.15 in it.  It's hung on his bedroom wall since.  He's now approaching six and it's time to get him out to the field.  In addition, I'm supposed to be his "kindergarten show and tell" subject tomorrow morning...you know, the old man airplanes from tiny ones to 747s, etc.  So, I brought the Trainer home to shine it up and discovered the engine was stuck from sitting so long.  So, I took the plug out and put some air tool oil in it and went off to work at NASA.

Came home and fiddled with it until it seemed as loose as it was going to get since it is a very tight fit at the top.  OK, time to put the plug back in.

Oh Oh!  After only a modest attempt to secure it in the machinef aluminum button head the threads stripped drastically.  Oh, boy...now what.

Went on line and discovered that Norvel has gone the way of the Model T with no apparent source of parts.

I then thought of Stunt Hangar (and the other forum, of course, over at Len's Place).  You guys know everything.

So, does anybody have any old Norvel 15 head buttons they can live without?

Anybody have suggestion for repair?  I've heard people talk about threaded inserts that could be put in place.  Anybody had any experience with such an operation.

Help!

Thanks in advance.

I read with interest I thought it was going to end with - I had the plane out and put it on the garage floor ready to pack into the car when shareen...........

Google around, or search here - Norvel is back, but right now there's only some guy's email address to appeal to (supposedly there's a web site coming early next year).  I don't know if he'd have that particular part -- apparently a group of Russian modeler cum entrepreneurs bought out the product line and has found a production facility, and this guy is their North American dealer.  They're bringing production on line one motor at a time, so if they've got that one going then you're good to go.

Good luck -- I understand that's a good engine.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Ted,
Are you going to borrow a 747 to take along as well?

I would contact Bob Mattes and get a head made that will accept a Nelson plug.

Clarence Lee fixes stripped glow plug threads in heads.  He advertises in the classified sections of model airplane mags.  He has done a couple for me that have worked perfectly since.

More locally you could call Doug Galbraith up in Davis and see what he has available. He handles the Cyclon engines and Nelson heads and plugs for very high-zoot FF stuff and can either make it from scratch or tell you where to get it. Norvel engines are well known (not necessarily well liked) in the FF community.

I have emailed two local guys I know who have Norvel experience.  Will let you know if I get any bites.

Phew!! When I saw the heading I thought Shareen may have had a "blind spot" moment.

Hey,

A great big thanks to all for pitching in for me.  I've sent an email the the Klondike address to try to buy a couple which seems the easiest way to go.  If that doesn't work out I'll investigate some of the alternatives you all so graciously provided.

Thanks again!

Ted
