A little off topic but cool
« on: July 22, 2009, 05:59:05 PM »
Today I watched a 747 land at our local airport that has a 5000' runway. :o  They made it look easy. I have used more runway than that trying to land a Cessna 150 there. My hats off to the professionals.  The link has a video: http://www.newsregister.com/article/40872-evergreen+747+set+arrive+mac+wednesday+morning

Very powerful video but one wonders why? Too, I bet it was not fully loaded!

I'm thinkin' that the 747 will be displayed just west of the #1 museum building (the one with the Spruce Goose)?
So, that's why there's no longer a pair of CL circles in that location? Just wondering... HB~> Steve

The attached article states that the 747 was 250,000 lbs. under gross weight, so you are correct.

Even so, quite an accomplishment! A huge plane for a short space.

My understanding is that they are building a Waterpark attraction where the C/L site is and probably includes the area where the R/C strip is now.  Here is a quote from the local paper:

"The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum was bringing in the first-generation 747, one of its retired cargo planes, to serve as the centerpiece for a water park it is planning to develop on the museum site."  end quote

They also have a 747 that they converted to a water bomber- I've seen video of that mutha doing a test drop- amazing. I think they are having some delays in getting it certified with the FAA- flying it low and slow through hills and valleys and then dumping tons of water in a few seconds is probably not in the original Aircraft Flight Manual performace data.

Not such a big deal, considering all the low speed devices and the use of thrust reversers.

Landing an old 707 on a short strip was a big deal.

At the old Fairfax Airport in KCK there was an airshow in which one of the big military cargo planes had landed for the show.  I got to talk to the pilot about it.  He stated the landing is no problem.  The problem is getting it back out and it was flying empty.  DOC Holliday
