2011 US Nats , Got a spare plane?
« on: December 17, 2010, 05:07:03 AM »
Gday guys..

Im looking forward to coming over to USA in 2011, to fly in expert and Classic Stunt. My dad will also be coming over with me.

We came in 2004 for the Worlds, and enjoyed our time alot. Will be a great time to see old friends and make new ones.

I will be bringing over 2 models, 1 for Aerobatics and 1 for Classic, so thats 2 model boxes, Each of us to carry one.
Dad mentioned to me that he would be interested in flying in the US Nats also ( he is intermediate / Advanced flyer able to fly the complete pattern and has flown in several Nationals in Australia in advanced Class.

The problem is, we dont have a plane for him to fly. Due to a bad experience 17 years ago when he was flying one of my models - had control failure and crashed. Being young myself I was a little Harsh on dear old dad, and he has refused to fly or test fly any of my models since. Sort of Superstition if you will.
I offered that he fly my classic model in Advanced but again - Not interested.

So how do we get him a model to fly ??  Taking 3 models Isnt possible.

We discussed the idea, and would like to put forth the following idea for my fellow Stunt Fliers in America to consider.

Dad would like to Purchase a Stunter of 40 Size Complete Ready to Fly, with engine ready to go, to be able to fly in the US NATS 2011 in advanced.
Since we will not be able to bring this aircraft back home with us to Australia - What to do with it after the contest ?

Dad would like to then Donate the Aircraft complete with engine ready to fly -   after the contest to the Junior whom the US Stunt community think are most deserving, most improved or most needed of a Stunter 40ish Size.

This could be done with a simple Vote and presentation after the contest. Im sure there are MANY candidates for this award among your ranks.

 H^^

We have lines and handle and all the regulars like fuel etc props I would source in the states.

Once again thanks for your Consideration - I'm sure we can make this work.

I can be contacted via email or in this channel or PVT Message if you wish to remain ANON .

Kind regards PJ

Beginner is flown the same day and that could be donated to the younger class winner in Beginner.  The two classes are one circle apart in the grass area at the AMA site.

Allen, you are thinking of Intermediate.  Advanced is flown on the L pad with the Open contestants.  The Junior contestants are flown on same day as Walker Cup.  Best bet is to check NATS schedule as I see some events are moved up in the week and some are shortened.  All control line is to be done by Friday of that week.

Pj,  maybe the local guys can help you find a new home for the extra plane.  jeh

Local to whom? Local to me or local to indiana?

I was thinking something like a vector sized modle - Something that a junior would be able to improve upon. We have given away several models to up and comming fliers down here to help them get forward in the sport.

Im sure there is someone out there - Just remember im not asking for a free model - I did mention we would like to purchase it - then donate it to some deserving upon the completion of the contest.

Any movers or shakers?

PJ - if I come to the NATs (iffy) and I can fit it in the car (likely), I can bring the Skyray and anyone who wants is welcome to fly it.

I won't know if this will work out until much closer to the event.

Thanks for the offer Brett.  H^^ Keep it on the plate - Hopefully you will get there - like to catch up..

I was kind of thinking something more like a vector or legacy ,tbird, nobler.. ( Heck even a nobler ARF.. ). that would benifit a flier looking to step up to somethign nicer. Dad has flown 60 sized models but enjoys 40 size..

Why are u iffy on comign??

Come on now PJ,  I give you credit for having more smarts than me.  Why would I say local to you when you don't have room for an extra plane.  There is a great group of guys in INDIANA that someone could supply a competitive plane that would only need trimming to suit your Dad.  Maybe Alan Goff could could even find one for you. I have a kit-built Vector that I am retiring, in excellent shape. LA46 power. I would be happy to donate the plane but would like to have the engine back. I live in the San Francisco area and we generally have a number of Nats attendees from this area who maybe could transport it. I also have a Score with Enya 61CXS that has been much modified with all new controls etc that is a very good flyer plus is take-apart including the stab/elevator. It has been transported in a Sport Tube snowboard carrier, smaller than a set of golf clubs in a hard case. Same deal, I would donate the plane but need the engine back. Anybody willing to travel that far to attend a contest in Indiana deserves some help. Photos available of both. Both are contest veterans and well trimmed.

Mike, that sounds like a nice idea - so far the clubhouse leader. I understand about the engine. How about this for consideration. Could that Vector be modified to house a moki .51 ? I have 5 of these that are completely useless to me now as ive been using stalker engines for the past 10 years. I would be happy to donate a moki .51 engine as have it as a complete ready for fly unit for someone deserving.

I would be happy to post you the moki .51 for you to put into said model. I can supply it with tank and prop. Let me know what you think? - Sorry johhny.... didnt know what you meant ( some people dont know im from aust either.. )

Hi PJ:

I have no idea what size the Moki is or what its mounting bolt pattern looks like. The cowl on the Vector is a tight fit (intentionally) around the LA46 so it likely would require surgery to make some other engine, with unknown to me shaft length and NVA location as well, fit in there. Used LA46s can probably be had for $25 or so, and new they are about $75. I have a friend with six of them NIB who I can ask if he would part with one for a good price in view of the intended end user. It is such a perfect engine in the Vector I really think it should stay that way.

You will be glad to know that my Vector, like all my models, has the AMA number on the upper right panel of the main lifting surface. Even though it is symmetrical.

Hi PJ and Mike:

I have an idea.  How about I trade a NIB silver LA46 for one of PJ's Moki 51's?  I can provide Mike with the 46 (I will even be happy to break it in for you, since you have a very busy schedule).  That way the 46 now in the Vector can stay in it with no engine switching required.  If PJ prefers to keep his Moki's for future use, I would be delighed to donate the 46 for the privilege of giving PJ's dad a hand, along with Mike, the Good Guy Lawyer in the White Hat.   H^^

Here's to a happy Nats for the guys from the land of Oz!   y1

I guess with views of looking at having to send over a moki... having to modify it, having to do extra work the end result probably isnt going to be that much of an improvement. Taking all this into consideration we should probably run with that as the engine choice.

Also becasue your farmiliar with its setup - it can be setup fairly shortly. As time will be a factor once we arrive I will be busy getting myself ready for 2 events so this is almost a side event for Rowland Snr.

I do not have a problem purchasing the engine also - bear in mind the cost of flying oversea's car rental, accommodation - a little bit more really isnt a problem.

You can email me pjrowland.family@gmail.com if youwant to talk about $$.

As I initially mentioned, I'm not asking for a loan model, becasue there is little incentive for someone to provide said plane. But if you wish to loan the model for the contest and want the engine back - I would be happy with that also ( the main point of this excerise is to enable dad to fly so he can say " hey I flew in a US Nats ".

The reasons we were going to donate was to give back to the stunt community, down here we are all for trying to help up and comming flyers become better, to push the sport and to make new friends. Stunt needs more juniors and those fringe fliers when they get a better model alway become better. We have a local builder who pumps out 4 - 5 modles a year consitantly and only has enough room for maybe 10 of his favorites. So many MANY models get sold and handed down to others who campaign them for many years.

We wanted to offer that to a lucky junior or deserving Advance / intermediate flier, obviously we would consult with the guys who are at the contest to come up with someone who would deserve it. If you want the engine back - thats fine, if you want $ 75 for a new one and that can also be given to a flier, I dont mind doing that either. Its a small price to pay for the joy it will give someone.

Cheers guys.

Ohh and im glad the number is on the top  LL~ The word smartass jumps to mind :) :) :) That thread was meant to kill time there was little seriousness to the conversation :)

Kim.

I would be happy with that if you want to go that way.. The moki .51 is a superb engine. I have no further requirements for the moki .51 - Currently in my line up Ive got:

1 xSaito .72
1 x Saito .56
4 x stalker .61
2 x Stalker .61 Longstroke
4 x Stalker .81
1 x Stalker .76
5 x Moki .51 ( all run in  non have had more than 500 flights. I can pick one of the fresher ones for you.)
10 x Enya .19's ( lancaster project backups. )

The moki .51 I can part with one of the ones that has been run, all also in perfect condition

- I know dad wants to keep the NIB moki ( why i dont know.. ) Im a stalker man..

If you want to run it in, that would be Fantastic.

Yes good luck to all those competing in the Australian Nationals ** GO JOE!! ( non biased.. :) )
- I will not be in attendance due to work commitments I cant get Holidays and then expect MORE holidays to go to USA - So I guess you can say Im foregoing my own Nats, to come to USA Nats. And you cant wipe the smile off my face :)

is there a photo of the model?? can we all see in here?

I will also take a close look at the text, I will get some new decals made up to match the colour and font to put on with his temp AMA number for purpose of competition. Or If I can see what It looks like I can get some decals made that will not impact the design astheics of the ship in question. Sure It wont be hit with a clear coat, but It wont pull off for the duration of the contest.

Here are recent pics of both. My own feeling is that the Score is a better bet for what you have in mind, especially if that includes taking it home to Oz. I am about 99% certain the US stunt community can come up with an Enya 61 or an LA46 on very reasonable terms. I will send you a pm on this point.

The "wing lettering" thing is probably just an example of that wonderful stick-in-the-eye quality of the Aussie personality. Erwin Rommel commented after meeting Aussies in battle that he would not want to command them as a fighting force. "Fierce fighters but impossible to discipline." And thank goodness for that.

Hiya mike.
The Vector looks superb, it looks like a real winner - shame to retire such a nice model. Im sure he will love flying that and someone else will get a kick out of getting it given to them as a donation for doing good at the contest. - That font and text is easy to match. I look forward to meeting you.

I guess the next obvious questions are - how do we proceed?

I have no intent to bring it back home. I will be flying over with 2 models as it is.

I really wanted something ( for my father ) to be able to fly in advanced - that vector looks amazing :) He will be tickled pink.

Im happy with that senario.
