10 size aeroplain...
« on: March 08, 2007, 05:33:38 PM »

  Hi Guy's and Gal's  H^^
Im lookin for suggestions about a amaller type aerop[lain to put on a demo at the Grade schools where my Grandchildren go. The school yard is not big enough to go with a 25 size model I don't think.
What model would be good w/a 10 size engine? What size lines, length and any other info that is amoung ya'll.
I also want to consider 15 size with the same idea in mind.
Nothing big enough to scare these youngsters either.
Sure do 'ppreciate all ya'll's help... H^^

Brodak has the Flying Clown and the Circus Prince 09-20 size engine. Kids would love it.

You might consider Black Hawk Models Custom Special. It builds fast and takes very little power to fly it. I just finished one to relive  my youth and have a T.D.09 on it. Thats more motor then it needs but any old Norvel 074 or an AP hornet 09 or any of the low powered options will work well. In fact get one with a muffler and it will go a long way towards relieving childrens anxiety about loud noise.

Hi Gil,

A Flying Clown, Circus Prince (my oersonal sentimental favorite!), and a Sig Akromaster should all be great on a modern .10 (or maybe even less!) and fly pretty good. ;D

I'm just now finishing up an original PDQ Baby Clown. It looks like it is meant to use an OK Cub .09, but i'm going to use a TD .09.

Hi Gil,

I would add to the list I made to include the Black Hawk Custom Special.  Any of todays .10 size engines would be good for it. y1

It is one of those I saw "back in the day", but I forgot that Larry has it until I saw Dennis mention it.  I even have an original Scientific box from the '60s here, one of the "cool" planes for us young'uns back then. ;D

:) ::) Also look at the Sig Acromaster. It's a fast build and nice looking plane.

I put an OS.10 converted from RC on a RIngmaster Jr. in place of a McCoy.19 for a fellow and it flies great.

Doubt you can find an easier build than an Akromaster. On the other hand be prepared to unpretzel the trailing edge. Cheap too. A young flyer in our club favors that plane, doing the beginner pattern. A modern .10 should fly this. I've had a ball with jr Flite Streaks. A bit more involved to build. Definitely a modern.10 will work there. Will probably slow them down and lop enough weight off the front to make them fly easy. I've overpowered mine just for laughs with fp15s. Get your attention when powered up with a modern .15. Probably docile with a .10. The Brodak Streak features a standard leading edge and capstrips. Whereas the Brodak jr. Flite Streak has a 2 part leading edge and no capstrips. Seem to weigh the same. The Brodak update of the clown racer is a similar easy build, perhaps a bit smaller. If you're interested in a trainer plane the youngsters can build as a first time project, how about the solid wing Sig Shoestring.

I'm surprised the nobody mentioned the Wee Duper Zilch. I have been flying mine with a K&B .099 for the last 12 years and it's really an impressive little plane.

With a straihght wing, it's also very easy to build. I scratchbuilt mine in one weekend.

If you're into competition, it is OTS eligible.

As seen in the photo, it's a bit battle worn but still flies well.

Hi Bob,

I have been planning to build a WDZ for three years.  I have a couple of OS MAX 10"S" engines that will 4-2 (they look, and run, like a miniature OS 35S).

Would have used a GH .09, but I don't have one!  LL~

What length lines do you use?  And are they .012 stranded?

Thanks  H^^

Hi Bill
I'd never use a G.H. 09, cant even imagine what the fuss is over them. The OSMax 10 is so superior that there is no comparison.
I first used one in a Jr Ringmaster and it runs so well and is so cheap on fuel that the Torp come out looking like a distant 3rd. You should get one in the air and I think that you'll agree.

Dennis;
You are probably right the OS .10 will out perform the .09 Green Head, but FWIW sometimes performance isn't as good as "I did it". There is just something about the sound of the old "Green Heads" that takes preference over performance. Bill I have to agree with you the ".09 Green Head" is a great choice. Remember this is my opinion, of coarse I am just a little biased I prefer the old over the new hands down.

HI Guys,

The OS 10 is probably *30* years old, but I haven't had a GH .09.  I, too, just like those old engines.  Especially in an OTS plane like the Wee Duper Zilch.

The little OS 10 looks just exactly like a early '70s OS 35S (that was put in the dryer on high heat! LOL!!) and runs just like it, but it isn't close to the power of the OS 10 FP, etc..

On the subject of 10's ...what would be a nice prop and plug? They will be on a clown and ringmaster jr. I got sig champion 10% for fuel, will that be ok or 15% better?
The 10's are FP's and FSR's RC changed to C/L. I got about 50' to fly in, any further and i'll be picking pecans.  :o

Gil;

OK Pal I got the engine for ya and here is what I suggest, .012 Lines 52 ft.  Fox Superfuel or equivalent, 7/4 or 7/6 Prop. I would suggest that if you use another fuel that it have only castor no synthetic. This whole synerio will be open for suggestions as this is just my opinion.

  "Billy G" aka "The G-Man"   S?P S?P S?P

EDIT--- Before I get jumped for saying no synthetic oil. my reason for this statement is that this is an older engine with an iron piston,(could be wrong but why take a chance) All my older engines use straight castor period, no exceptions. AGAIN MY OPINION.

Bill,

I agree with all-castor, but I think you only need 22%-25% not the 28% in Superfuel. Also I'd use 15%-25% nitro. I believe I used mostly 7x6 wooden props on my Pets. To switch from CL to RC and back on a Pet only requires removing the spraybar and either adding or removing the throttle assembly. No insert required.

I thought that Pets had flat pistons for years until I realized they have a step-down baffle. Nice little engines.

George and Gil

George, you are probably correct on the oil content. The reason I suggested "Super Fuel" with its heavy oil content is that this is an Ebay find and I have no idea what was run in it before. It's better to be safe than sorry, it can be adjusted later.
