CHARLIE BRUCE
« on: March 26, 2014, 02:16:24 PM »
I just received word from Charlie's wife Kay, that Charlie passed away this morning at 4:00 AM with heart problems.  Charlie was a former MECA President, SAM competitor, OTS competitor, and built the JB Fox 35 with Larry Jenno.  His book, "101 Old Engine Analyses, Large and Small" remains the definitive work on disassembling, assembling, running old spark engines.

Charlie Bruce was the consummate modeler. He could make anything, wood or metal, and you couldn't tell it from an original part. He was in the S.A.M. hall of fame, and had been awarded the Keeper of the Flame award at the VSC.  He started and ran the Fireball event at the VSC for 3 years. He loved flying Ignition stunt.

He will be sadly missed.

Very sorry to learn this.  Charlie and Kay were fixtures at some of the early VSCs.  He was one of the Good Guys.

Sad news indeed. He always seemed to have something a bit different at VSC.  Here's a photo of one of his very different planes.

Another great is now gone.  He rebuilt a couple of ignitions engines for me.  Was always great to talk to at VSC.  My prayers to his wife and family.

Lately, it seems our numbers are decreasing at a rather rapid rate.  Given the ages of most of us, that's probably expected.  Doesn't make it any easier, though.

No easier at all! I'm sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. He was very kindly and enthusiastic when he showed me his flying star at VSC, and I appreciated his dedication to the spirit of the event and to the adventurous spirit of the times represented. 'wonderful modeler.

I met Charlie in 1995 at VSC, he along with another couple sat with my son & myself. We had a great time. I'll always remember the way Charlie spoke of people that chose to " cheat " in modeling.. I always respected him.

I had great admiration for Charlie.  At VSC, we talked about our respective adventures in the Air Force.  He got me interested in building a Jim Walker  "Fireball", and he provided the carved fuselage that turned into a nice old plane for me.
