OS Max S .35 Break-in prop?
« on: February 26, 2019, 06:34:26 PM »
Anyone have the instruction sheet that came with the old OS Max S .35?  If so, what does it recommend as a break-in prop?

My guess would be a 9 x 5 or a 9 x 6.

I ran them exclusively in the 70's and 80's.  Broke them in on a 9-4.  Never got a manual.  Don't let it break full lean for about 20 min. then mount it on something and point the nose up and down till it does a smooth 4-2-4.  If you can put an hour on it without overheating you will have a great stunt engine.  Don't forget the caster.   Use a 10 x 6W or EW(if you can find one) to fly it.

Others may have their own way but this one works.

Thanks, Ken.

I appreciate the guidance.

I run my other two Max S .35s on Sig Champion 10% Nitro and 25% caster.   I have a quart of Brodak 10% Nitro and 29% castor. Would you recommend running the quart of 29% castor through for the initial break-in runs?

Everyone says the weakness of the S .35 is the connecting rod.  It sounds like you used them enough to have a good idea how long the connecting rod lasts.  If you don't add oil journals to connecting rod, about how long do they last?

Thanks again,
Joe Ed

If the Caster is real caster that is about right.  We ran 30-35% with the nitro depending on the temperature.  More in the summer.  I have only had one con rod wear out.  "Big Art" set up mine and there was a nylon insert in the crankshaft pin that kept it in place.  I attribute that to the long life.  I have put over 1000 flights on the one I still have and it is starting to show signs of old age.  I think I ran it on some stuff with fake caster.

Good luck - Ken

Hi
We stuffed a 35 recently. No real indication anything was amiss, when the grey goop came out the exhaust and all the innards were shot in a flight (the rod looked terrible!). We had been running 25% Benol Caster and not that many hours running but hard work on a heavy profile stunt trainer for our sons.
