Enya Break In and Mufflers
« on: April 08, 2015, 03:46:24 AM »
To muffle or not to muffle on break-in; that is the question.

I have four new Enya stunt engines and I will have to break in on the bench.  My question is; should I break in with or without the muffler?

I am prone to go without the muffler....

Thanks in advance.

I break in the engines without mufflers (or pipes) to keep the heat down since heat is the biggest concern with a new engine.  The muffler attachments with clamping pressure can cause distortion of the crankcase shape when hot as well.  As a matter of practice the last true breakin is not done until the engine is in an airplane in the air anyway WITH muffler or pipe installed under flight loads and temps.  So start the engine open and cool........like you would your 1916 Curtis Ox-5 from your Jennie....

    Hi Dave:

I support what Dave told you.

Enya engines used to have hardend c.i. cylinders which took a bit longer to break in.  Perhaps your engines do not have c.i. sleeves and pistons etc. Take your time and you will love the Enyas. I have been told to leave the piston at bdc while the engine cools??????????  Of course you can break ithe ingines in while in flight by running them in a rich mode AFTER they have been run on the bench.

Good luck and will see you at the club meeting  Sunday.

I have had good luck following the recommendations that Brodak provides with their engines. First few tankfuls w/out muffler on a bench. Then switch to a muffler (don't overtighten...ever) for the rest of the break in. Smaller diameter prop naturally. Also, all Enyas are not the same. The older designs are iron piston and take a lot of break in. Their ringed and ABC engines don't take any longer break in than similar engines from other manufacturers. I find they run better, sooner than the older iron piston ones but...your mileage may vary. 8)
