Super Tigre C 35 doubt.
« on: January 06, 2007, 10:30:37 AM »
Hello all.
In the 90s I flew a profile stunter powered by a friendŽs ST 35C (plain bearing, bafle piston) I remember it as one of the sweetest engines IŽve flown and allways wanted to own one.
Bought one second hand and, being exactly the same externally, it has different innards, flat piston and two schnuerle ports (very similar to big case 1970 FOX 40 tuned by Aldrich).
Have I bought a bashed engine?
Has someone flown one like mine?
How they perform in a stunter?
As allways, thanks a lot for your atention.

Manuel.

Hello Manuel

ST made that engine in 2 differant versions, a combat version with a flat top piston, and  a  baffle piston version for  stunt-sport
The motors are the  same except for the  piston , sleeve, head, and  sometimes venturie.
The version  you want is most likley the baffled  piston version

Most people say the flat top is unsuitable for stunt. However, Dave Day has won the Brit. Nats Vintage event more than once with his Box Car Chief, with a motor he reports IS an ST C35 Flat Top. It is fitted with a tongue silencer. I've seen it fly and don't recall any 4/2 about it, more of a steady 2 stroke, but it was steady and consistent.
Ian Russell.
[I can remember the schedule o.k., the problem is remembering what was the last manoeuvre I just flew!].

Brian Gardner in Australia will soon be making Stunt ABC piston and liners for your motor.

Thanks very much.
The engine seems to be over the hill with low compression, once I have restored it and chech the rest of parts, IŽll think to have a PL set for it.

Manuel
What you have may be a ST 35 C PDP (perry Directional Porting) that they sold in the early 1980's.  I used 2 of them in my P-38 that was in Model Aviation March 1986.  I still use them for scale and they run flawlesslee.

HI Ed,

Is Brian making the P/L sets for the plain bearing ST 35?  For some reason I thought is was for the BB version.  ???

Thanks!

HI Manuel

You can use them but not in a typical 4-2, they would work better in a wet 2 cycle for stunt, Very similar to the way we ran them in slow combat. You would want to use a lower pitch prop and mild nitro (5%)

If you opt to buy one of the Aussie  P\S coming and they do the baffled version you will have to get a new head for your  motor.
If they do the flat top piston and sleeve, they were the same in both ball bearing and  plain bearing 35s, and will fit either case.
Seems to me  a lot of  trouble to go thru  just to run that motor????  But I understand if  you  just want  to !!  ;D

HI Bill

If he makes the flat top it will fit either, they were both the same. If he  makes the baffled piston version you can put one in a G21-35 Ball Bearing case and find a stunt head for it  :-)  :o   I did this years ago.
They will fit , and you can end up with a ball bearing  35 stunt motor  LOL
I still have many of these engines  as I run lots of em back in the 70s,  including one of the stunt ball bearing versions I made

Regards

Randy
