coleman lantern fuel
« on: October 19, 2016, 01:32:34 PM »

Back in the seventy's some one said to run coleman fuel if your fuel tank was too small to fly the pattern, then here on the hanger I saw a post about don't use the coleman fuel, but there wasn't any explanation as to why not to.  Does any have any suggestions as to not use the lantern fuel?

       Thanks

I don't know why not to use it.  The person who told me about it said not to use more than two ounces per gallon -- I couldn't say why.

It seems to improve fuel efficiency by about 10%, starting slightly, and doesn't seem to have much other impact on the running characteristics of the engine.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I have used 1 ounce per quart to get better fuel mileage.  2 ounces per quart will greatly help winter starting when the temp is below 40 or so.  You probably won't get a good stunt run with 2 ounces but at least the engine will start and run OK.

You can use  Coleman fuel ,  Lead free gas, or   acetone
Acetone is best,  again no more than 2 ounces per gallon

A glo fuel spill on a Brodak butyrate surface isn't real good.  Acetone has to be much worse!

Floyd, I'm hoping 2 oz. of acetone diluted into a gallon probably wouldn't have much of an effect that way, and Coleman fuel probably even less. It's one of those things I'd try first on a painted test board, though.

I think I'll be trying this when the weather gets cold because my #1 stunter is shorter on spare fuel capacity than I'd like. I'll do the test board and report back. I have both Coleman fuel and acetone to try, as well as the paint & dope test board from my last build. I even have a butt-ugly plane to test it on.
