Replacement Piston and Liner for Enya 61CXS
« on: October 17, 2011, 04:13:10 AM »
Can anyone suggest where I can obtain a new piston and liner for my Enya 61CXS  (side exhuast) motor.  I have tried Ken Enya and he says tha the parts are not available.  This particular motor is not ringed: there is an oil groove in the piston that's all.   Although I obtained it S/H I know that originally the motor came from Alberto Parra but he does not have the parts either.

The motor seized in flight and the piston is badly scored although the liner is unmarked.  I have stripped it and that is the only damage to it.

Thanks

There is a guy who sells a lot of NIP Enya parts on EBAY the seller name is "shtterman". See if he doesn't have what you need. You should consider more Castor oil in your fuel. I have not managed to burn up an engine with my foolishness, but I never have less than 20% castor for lube. When I go to 25%, 30%, or 35% Nitro I use 25% Castor. Almost all of my engines are steel sleeve with a cast iron piston.

Thanks for that: the problem may, or may not, have been fuel related.  Howeever,  the engine had a history - it was one of two that have been through a workshop fire and were stripped cleaned and  rebuilt: new venturi, bearings etc.  The seizure came after several good runs.     The other one is now in my ARF Legacy and is perfect ... so far!!!!

Have tried for shtterman on ebay no luck.

Heard from shtterman : they are on back order.   Tried searches on eBay can turn up Enya 60 pistons/liners but not 61CXS liners.  The part number is X-S61CXR04, I believe.

Thanks

Your best bet may be to see if it can be converted to the ringed 61 piston. I understand that the reason Enya switched to a ringed engine is that Enya could not get the unobtanium alloy needed to manufacture the ABC P&L. :-[

That part number is for the Ring One. The correct part number for the ABN one is 61CX04.

Many thanks you for that.  I have now placed a ringed piston,  liner and cylinder  head on back order with Ken Enya which he assures me will convert my 61CXS into a 61CXRS. He confirmed that the alloy for the piston for the ABN version lhas a supply problem.  Now I know what the 'R' stands for in the nomenclature!!  Thanks to all for help/suggestions

I'd be interested in knowing why the alloy(s) that Henry, Randy and Dubby use isn't good enough for Mr. Enya.  I can't imagine that half a dozen 10' lengths wouldn't solve the piston problem, and air freight wouldn't be all that much $. Also, there is the possibility of getting the material from Russia or Ukraine, probably even cheaper.  D>K Steve

I made a piston for an os abn liner from a fox piston casting once, the os Nickle did not like it at all. Every couple of runs it would bind up.  I would then take the motor apart, wipe off the grunge from the piston and liner, then it would run ok for about a couple of runs.   The fox castings ran fine when I machined some to go into a abc liner.

I have checked into piston matl. for these type engines. $1250.00 will get enough to do 220 pistons in the U.S A. it comes from overseas. It is hard to machine so tooling cost is high. Std. aluminum is a whole lot cheaper to deal with. Plus it does not require the extra hand fitting like Randy does to PA engines. Rings take up the slack.

Probably a high silicon content alloy that is the devil to machine.
