Power for ARFs,Vector, Smoothie and Oriental
« on: November 24, 2006, 12:49:16 AM »
Hello all.
Santa has accepted to come this year with three ARFs, Vector, Smoothie and Oriental. I have doubts about the power train, mainly between Fox 35 (Dixon tuned, very good, by the way), Magnum GP 40 (reworked for 4-2-4 work) Super Tigre 46 and Stalkers 35, 42 and 46.
Please, people who is flying these ARF, comment his power selection and his experiences.
Thankyou very much for your help.
Manuel.

Hi Manuel,

Given the engines you list as having, I would use the Fox 35 in the Smoothie, Magnum 40 in the Oriental and Stalker 46 in the Vector.  I have seen the Smoothie and Orientals run with those engines and they were great.

As to the Vector, I would use the Stalker 46 for the power that it has.  A .42 would not be an advantage because it also would need .018 lines so go with the 46.

Based on my experience with these ARF's, I would suggest switching Bill's suggestion for the Smoothie and Oriental.  The reason has nothing to do with power, but rather CG.  The Oriental comes out nose heavy with almost any engine.  Mine has a Magnum in it and needed 2.5 oz tail weight to get the CG right.  By the same token, the Smoothie assembles a bit tail heavy, so balances better with a bit heavier engine.  A Magnum 36 needed a metal spinner and an APC prop to get the CG right.  Both airplanes seem to need about the same power so the Fox should fly the Oriental well.

One of the local guys has a Vector ARF and initially used a good Fox which was not enough power, so I agree with Bill's suggestion for the bigger engine.

Hi Steve,

Good catch.  I did not factor in "balance", and I should have!  I didn't realize that the Smoothie came out more tail heavy than the Oriental.

Thanks!

Bill,
I think the issue is the long nose on the Oriental ARF plus the landing gear mount is forward of the aft firewall.  On the Smoothie, the nose is shorter and the landing gear is mounted aft of the aft of the wing LE.  There is probably more wood in the aft end of the Smoothie fuselage.

I have an L&J Fox 35 in my ARF Oriental, with an APC 10-5 and a Great Planes Alum. backed spinner I needed no tail weight to balance, am using a tongue muffler also.

I fly a Vector ARF with a OS 40 fp. It hauls it around nicely. I had to open up the cowl to help cool the engine. I also am building a ARF Smoothie. I plan on installing a Webra 32.

What would be a better choice for the Vector a Magnum 36 or a 46LA ?

I vote for the Magnum 36 XLS IIA (square head recent version).

I agree with Bill.  The Magnum is a terrific engine with no mods other than a venturi and needle valve assembly.  It is a little lighter than the OS, easy to cowl, and runs very well.
