O.S. Parts
« on: February 21, 2008, 01:55:23 PM »
Doe's anyone know of another backplate which will fit an LA25. Earlier posts recommended using an FT backplate to eliminate the dreaded remote n/v setup supplied by OS, and Tower Hobbies as a source. Unfortunately, Tower now lists the Part (22307000) as discontinued.  I checked the OS site and its listed a obsolete also. I tried an old Max 25 backplate, and the holes line up, but it is about 3/16" shallower. I can probably make an extender but prefer to find something that would just swap out.

Hi Al,

If all you want to do is eliminate the remote NVA, you might do as I did with my grandson's LA 15.  On the 15, the NV bracket was molded as part of the plastic back plate.  I just used an Exacto saw to carefully remove the molded bracket and installed a regular NVA in the venturi.

Some have had problems with the plastic backplates leaking air into the case; to prevent that happening, I applied a thin bead of Hi Temp Permatex (copper colored tube) to the seal area of the backplate, then replaced the backplate and put the screws in with normal torque.  Depending on the Permatex to seal, rather than compression of the plastic.  Working fine for several months, now.

Cheers,
Jim

G'day

The Thunder Tiger/Magnum GP25 backplate is a match—if you can find any.  Thunder Tiger 4 U does not seem to want to talk to me about gaskets for GP40 or GP25 but that's another story.

Plenty of people have had success with the plastic backplate but I think the critical issue regarding leaks is over tightening the backplate screws.  If you have a leak or slight distortion, a steel washer under the screw head may help if the backplate is not badly distorted.

Cheers, Geoff

If I just HAVE to use the plastic backplate, I like the High Temp silicon Jim mentioned, and blue loctite on the screws.  I have seen more screws back out with the plastic back plates than anything else.  One of our guys lost two or three screws on one flight!

Thanks for all the feedback.  For all the failure scenarios listed, I would prefer a metal backplate, I hate to fix a problem twice.  I think I'll try Geoff's suggestion and see if I can find one from either the Thunder Tiger or Magnum. I'll also continue to watch E-Bay for a parts engine listing.

Thanks Mate,   Al B.

A little of the hi temp permatex on the screw threads at assembly will keep them from getting loose.

Hi All

If you will put the backplate back together..clean.. using any of the silicone sealants...sparingly...and use  locktite on the 4 bolts, with a thin washer, you will not have any problems.
It is much better to use locktite rather than any of the silicone sealants on the bolts. I have seen this many times strip the threads by the silicone wanting to pile up in the end of the bolt holes in the case.

Regards
Randy

Mgnum backplates do not match up with FP/LA, diameter of crank insert is slightly smaller, also there is a small flat at the top of the FP backplate, not on the Magnum. The plate I tried was off a Magnum 32.

Dennis, et al

There was a time when Thunder Tiger and Magnum engines came out of the same factory in Taiwan.  The only difference was the logo on the side.  The engines we are talking about are the GPs which are FP clones.  My TT GP25 backplates measure the same as FPs.  I do not have a Magnum 25 to compare but my GP40s are direct parts swaps with the FP except for the NVA and venturi and they are direct parts swaps from TT to Magnum.  I believe that the currently available Magnums are all different to the Thunder Tigers and the FPs.

Cheers, Geoff

Geoff,

Are those parts available anywhere? Anyone find any? Is the GP25 swap for the LA25 or 40. Which GP backplate swaps to the LA40/46?

Thanks,

Dennis

Wayne Buran (Northcoast Hobby) to the rescue. Wayne somehow found out about my need and Emailed me that he had a backplate in stock, it's on the way. Thanks to all who helped. The Internet and Stunthanger, how did we get along without them ? I hope the ensuing discussion points to an alternate source for a suitable backplate. I'm sure all the suggestions to alleviate the problem work, but I still have a hard time accepting plastic parts on my engines.
