New to me Webra .40 Silverline
« on: June 19, 2014, 10:45:16 AM »
Useful for stunt?
How's it compare to .40 FP or other similar size engines?

Thanks.

I don't have any experience with Webra engines, but they seem to be performance engines, I would be surprised if they were stunt friendly.

Hi Andrew -

There is a different schneurle scavenged Hi-perf Speed series made in Austria- this one is Dykes-ringed baffled, made in Germany.

I ran a Webra 61 Black Head baffled ringed engine in R/C pattern a few years, and it ran great with good peformance and wear characteristics. I do not know much about the 40 but I would think it would be worth a try unless someone in the know says differently. The 40 looked just like the 61. The 61 I had even had needle bearings on the rod big end. They got replaced for the most part by the Webra Speed Schneurle 61. R/C pattern engines were never on top for very long as someone always came out with something new and better.

AARGH! Possibly the best stunt engine of all time was the 40VF, and it was a "performance" engine, too.

Certainly true Brett but I don't see many stunt 40 VF  flying without a pipe. I bet a stand alone 40 VF without a pipe would not be very stunt friendly.

So, has no one experience with the Webra .40 (A.K.A. 6.5) Silverline in a stunter?

HI Terry
Yes I bought several of those years back, they are just OK for stunt, they did not measure up to the HP 40 and others, so I did not go any farther with them. You do need to make sure you have spare parts, so you can get one that is fit very well

Would you elaborate on shortcomings Randy?
I got this primarily because of a perception of Webra's reputation for quality, but your comment about spares implies not so much.

They didn't produce a lot of power, and the ring fit was suspect, then the rings wore pretty fast, compression suffered. An  HP 40 would be a much better choice, as would many other engines TT36  AT 36 , ST46 , ST51, OS 46, OS 40H , Royal 40 Royal 45, FSR 40 FSR 45, Magnum Old Style 40 or 45, Older mag Gp44  ie...........

I had one for short period of time.  Just as Randy said, rings were out of round and power was no better than a FP 40.
Not really a bad engine, just so many others that are better.

You could contact Frank Bowman about piston rings. That alone could improve things a lot.  H^^ Steve
