I traded a plane for a Evo 36 yesterday I put it in my ME 109 and test run it this morning. about 12000 RPM rich with 9x4 prop 5%fuel 22% oil half and half with the smallest venturi . Then Jim whom I had traded the plane  called said he had put his Saito 62 in the plane and wanted to fly .
We met at our practice field and I got two flights in. 11x5 prop 8900 RPM same fuel 64 ft. lines. I am impressed this engine did not run away, It has more power then any LA 40  or Fp 40 I would say it surpasses even a LA 46 .  After I do some testing with some 10 inch props I’ll buy another one and put them in my Heinkel 219. Also need to find out how much fuel it uses 4 oz isn't enough but Jim said after about a gallon of fuel four oz will be enough. He has one in a Tutor 2 with a 4 oz tank and can do the stunt pattern.

Great looking models and thanks for the Evo report.  I've only bench run mine but my experience has been similar to yours.  This engine definitely does not hurt for power.  Also.. you ought to talk John into kitting your Heinkel 219 but two Evo 36's...Hold On!  :o

You are right I didn’t think about the hanging on part. New plain, take my Brodak 40 out of my Vector and install the Evo. Thanks for the wake up call.

That ought to be a good combination.  With the short landing gear of the Vector 40 I would consider a three blade prop over an 11" 2 blade.  There is a 10" 3 blade Evo prop available that might work...or you could bend the ldg gear to get more clearance if necessary.  I haven't tried the 3 blade prop but I have tried the "Evolution" 2 blade props - 10x6 and 11x5 size and found them to work very well.

Hey Pete where did you get the Evo props?  Does Horizon Hobby carry them or some one else?  Thanks, Gil

I bought them at my LHS (R/C Country in Sacramento).  I haven't checked the Horizon web site to see if they are listed there.  The 2 bladed ones look alot like the Thunder Tiger props (also excellent esp 11x4.5)  The three bladed ones are square tipped, I think some of the adds for the R/C Evo engines show them  I looked at them and the pitch was not marked but I'm guessing around 4 or 5 pitch x 10" diameter.

From memory (Ha) I think the evo 3 blade 10 inch prop was about 3 1/2 inch pitch. I heated mine and changed it to a 5 inch pitch. I did this about two years ago and I went out last night to check and it’s still holding the 5 inch pitch.

I put my EVO in a T/F Nobler ARF that had a Magnum 36, same bolt pattern. I'm running a T/F 11-4 and launching at 10400 and getting 5.2 - 5.3 laps. I took off the limiter but had to add fuel tube over the needle and remote NVA to keep it from vibrating to the rich side after launch. It does a great job with the Nobler, using some old Cool Power 10% nitro with added castor. After I use it up I'll switch to Champion also need to get some 11-5's. But so far no complaints.

The fuel milage on my evo looks like it is going to take about 4 1/2 or 5 oz of fuel for the pattern. 4 min. 35 seconds for 4 oz . But while the engine is running I notice pink raw fuel running off the muffler I figure it is out of the venturi or the front bearing. the front bearing is a sealed bearing on my engine so it must be from the venture. So with a Tigre needle valve and a drill, brass tubing,  a couple of washers some solder I transformed the small evo venturi into to what I call a driper .  I drill a hole trough the brass tubing then with a washer slide it over the Tigre seat align the hole with the hole in the seat and solder through the hole on the back side of the tubing then file a half round grove on the bottom side of the venturi to aline with the venturi hold down bolt. then drill a hole through it for the small brass bushing then a little larger indention for the head of the bushing. I know it looks rough but I did this on the K&B Sportsman engines and it worked great. I hope this will improve my fuel milage but it will be a couple of weeks before I get a chance to fly it.

I flew the Evo  about four times today. the modified venturi only got me about 20 to 30 seconds of time. It wasn’t worth the effort. Some one in another post said it right, put a 4 1/2 oz tank on the plane and go fly,

Willis,

I have found that a layer (or two) of panty hose over the venturi, held in place with an O-ring, will catch lots of fuel which would otherwise splash/splatter onto the front of the engine/plane.

Might help the fuel consumption............(this is a perfect place to say: YMMV!!)
Also keeps FOD out of the engine.

Cheers,
Jim

The panty hose also acts to reduce the effective throat area of the venturi by restricting it. FWIW

Jim Welch dropped a Evo head by for me to try today. He hogged it out with a dremel . Maybe it will soften the break a little.

Willis I put a Fox 36 head shim in my Evo and by raising the head (.025) it soffened the break, but I want to try to reduce the squish band like the head that you have shown also.
Keep us posted as to how well it works.  Thanks for the e mail, in the mean time I got some info on how to enlarge the pictures.          H^^

I finally flew my Evo today with the modified head. Conclusion is it didn’t work as good as the stock head. any rpm below 8,500 it would start misfiring on the ground and go wide open after launch at 9,000 rpm 11 x5 prop 5% fuel. It did work with a APC 10 1/2 x 4 1/2 prop at a rich 10,200. On a good note it got great fuel milage seven minuets on 4 OZ of fuel. Who ever brought this engine to market did their homework. I did notice I had to raise the tank about a 1/4 inch above the center of the engine to make the engine run equally in inside and outside maneuvers. It is hard to believe that the head could make that much difference in fuel milage.

Willis,

Did you compare pre-mod needel setting to post-mod setting needed to reach 10,200?  Could it be that leaner mix is needed post-mod to reach the same rpm?  Just wondering..............

FWIW, I've also had to change the tank height after only a muffler change. It's always somethin'... n~ Steve

Thats interesting Willis, when I flew with Jimmy last week, the hemi'd evo head did the exact same thing.  A total disaster on the big head.  I think I mentioned something to Jimmy about running a lower pitch prop and the stock head after seeing the modified head flame out about three times in a row.  I'm sorry I missed yesterdays perfect weather, but I had to go pick up my new Garand instead.

Sunday.s flying on the EVO was as usual another experimental adventure...the weekend before I broke the cardinal rule of the scientific method...did two changes at once and screwed up the whole perspective of my goal...the head did give mileage and reasonable performance but the Ventura size really clouded the situation when drawing a conclusion. The prop size tried yesterday was an improvement over the zinger 11-5 Ive been running by far on Willi's EVO.My test stand engine tells me one thing and the one in the air kinda backs it up but taking in mind the variables of prop etc.,it's an ongoing test session. The EVO out of the box is a great engine, but ever since I took my dad's lawnmower apart when I was 6 I just kinda gotta mess with stuff!Anyway Steve,if I mess it up too bad we can always shoot it with the garand!.....jim
