Laughs from e-bay

Anyone follow the auction last week?  An Orwick 73 (low S/N) went for $700+

There was a Wen Mac P-38 that went for 3700 dollars and while the plane looked spectacular, one wonders how much that same plane in a really nice condition box?

Also saw a Ace R/C brand throttle sleeve for a Cox 049 engine sell for 27 or 28 dollars.

You know, its one thing to know that there are people out there that will pay this much but keep in mind that it is only because someone else bid darn near as much to drive it that high.

I'm not familiar with this particular engine described. I can only speculate that regardless of the quality you do have to realize these products are out of production and depending on condition just may warrant that price. One can ask how many of these are actually left. As for the p-38, I had only seen one of these personally. I guess if you are that hardcore collector it just may be the holy grail to that individual. Our memories seem to go back in time and think about how we could of bought that item for its at time price. I own several Mccoy's  redheads that my father gave me and who would think that these engines could even bring more than $45.00 but they do. My father laughs when he tells me how they would virtually ruin one a week just to fulfill a weekend flying session. He recalls paying under $5.00 for some of them. They do have a neat look to them which may explain the desire to want to run one but just like the above mentioned plastic planes they made a lot of these. I guess the majority have either made it to the trash cans or when the owners lost interest they gave these items away. I can't say that some of these numbers don't impress me because it does its just that individual wanting it more than myself. As much as I use Ebay's services, I think it does some harm to driving the prices up. It seems when an item sells for a high cost the public feels as though this sets the premise for that item. I've witnessed similar items for sale that were minutes apart sell for completely contradicting prices. On the other hand, I owe a lot to the service as I've been able to find what would've been impossible parts to find otherwise. Ken

I just bought a new Enya 45 6001 for $32.. it was dirty.. when I got it I was surprised that it was new.. A month ago I sold a Fox Combat 35 Special for $202.. NIB.. and just recently sold a RH 35 and RH 29 for $240... they were pristine, no boxes or directions... I was very surprised... I saw a Berkeley Custom Privateer list for $500 with the reserve not met... It had one bid and didn't sell.

Steve... all these guys pay..  several years ago I bought a NIB OS 40H Stunt for $138.. I have not seen anoher in new condition since..

It's all relative.. I liken eBay to fishin'... once in awhile you can hook a big one.. but ya still gotta go fishin'...

I am amazed at the prices ... truth is they aren't going down..  another notable auction an Elf 4 went for $2,562.99,

a 1957 SUPER TIGRE G31 1.5cc Diesel went for $405.58

The good stuff always gets top dollar... but there are diamonds in the rough out there too.. in early 2003 I have a Wen Mac P-38 in Pristine cond. selling for $2600, in my book , RTFs are getting quite a following.. it is one of those "cross collectible" toys..

I think that may be the secret here as there were only 125 of the Orwick 73's built from 1942-45. In 1945 Henry went to the "64". I don't imagine there are to many of them left. There were a few 73's built by others as repros, but if that was an original, it may have been needed for someones collection.

How do you put a price on someones happiness? Why does someone make fun of another when they are willing to spend to be happy? That Orwick 73 was part of the collection of Ted Etnikiknap ( I know I spelled that wrong). His collection was/is amazing. A lot of his engines were proto types or just plain rare. While I wouldn't spend that much for a Orwick 73 I would still love to have one.

I listed some Vintage Fox motors on there yesterday and was VERY suprised to see Fox 35's for $155.00 and more. What's up with that? Why would you pay over a hundred for a Fox 35?

To me I say there are still people out there with more money than brains.  If I could only get them to adopt me.  But, really gets me when I see something go for more than you  can still get it at.  I had two kits that were almost identical.  One was still in shrink wrap and the other one was started.  It was a foam wing kit.  One wing panel was messed up trying to sand dehidral.  The fuselage was started.  The opened kit that was not all there went for more than I paid for it.  The new kit didn't get close to the reserve I had on it, which was 3/4's of the original price.  It may wind up being  my fun scale plane. Simple answer: Take a NIB Fox .35 ($55 w/trade-in); add a Smith/Nelson crank ($50); add a Hemi-head ($35); add a Stuffer Backplate ($20) and presto! You got a $160 Fox .35. Now add custom fitting and assembly by Randy Smith, Lew Woolard or Larry Foster and maybe a Ceramic piston/cylinder assembly, and you got . . .

I agree that Ebay is like going fishing. I enjoy looking at whats for sale. Lots of history in these items. I have seen some stuff that I think is selling for way to much so I don't bid. There are some kits I see there that I would be willing to pay top dollar for because they are of sentimental value to me. Unfortunately "snipers" have beaten me to them.
 I'll keep trying though..

In fact I prefer to buy stuff in the "classifieds" here and SSW.

A $100.00 for a new in the box reliable stunt motor is not unreasonable. And a proven design at that. Actually perfect for many classic ships. No I don't want it, but whoever gets it will be happy.

Look who's laughing now, we are thinking of shooting a bid on that OS 35.  While I was looking through the pages of stuff that was up for auction, I found a couple of old ignition spark plugs that the guy wants $45 DOLLARS for it, I found that ridiculous.

Ralph, not to argue with you but for that money I'd as soon as buy a good motor that actually is made to run well from the beginning. There is something really wrong with buying a sows ear and trying to make it into a silk purse. Only the most die hard Fox afficianado can justify the expense of doing that. Don't take it personnel, it's only my opinion..

Wow, I sold all my Max 35s' when the Brodak 40 came out thinking they would end up not being very desirable in light of the much better B40. I didn't get that much even for a GMA rework NIB. Guess I should have hung on a bit longer.

I will share one of my ebay secrets.  At one time, I would not bid on an item with excessive postage.  Then I broke my rule and got the item, postage and all, for less than my highest bid.  Did that successfully a couple of more times.  I have too much stuff already, so fine for you to out bid me.   H^^

I'm in shock. Never in my life have I ever heard the words, my Fox was too powerful. Usually it was the opposite. In fact the Fox 35 was usually greeted with a few explatives in this area.

All of my later Fox 35's have been that way also. Generally go back to a stock head to detune them a bit. I think a lot of guys run to cold of a plug in them. Mine make gobs of power on Thunderbolt R/C longs. Pull 48 oz. planes with eze.

Hey Guys; A late model Orwick 64 just went for $688.00 last night. There was something like 24 bids on it. You just never know. I have noticed that many old sparkers are down in price a bit, as the economy goes down. Good time to pick up some bargains if you need a sparker. As long as it is not an Orwick.

Hi Don,

The serial number is 64394. In the upper R/H corner of the backplate, the number 275 is stamped. There is a little paint loss on the bottom and bypass side of the engine. It looks like someone tried to touch up the paint under the exhaust stack. (not me)

The main bearing and compression are great.A Champion plug is included, and it has the Orwick motor mount brackets installed. Two have Orwick stamped on them and two don't.

There are no broken or missing fins on the cylinder and head, and no cracks on the crankcase.

Thanks for the info Dee- Could be an Orwick built or Cunningham built engine. Based on the S/N I would guess it is from the 1946 builds. Orwick built 162 of them and Cunningham built 700. I am actually on the lookout for the 1947 4000 series engines.

All you have to do to bid in the last 3 seconds or less is join one of the sniper clubs. I believe Ebay has their own. Look at the time and date the auction ends, tell them how much you want to bid and when you want the bid placed. You don't have to be on line, they bid for you automatically. Don't forget you pay for this little edge. Done deal.

Years ago, I had a Super Tigre G27 diesel, a 19 size plain bearing.  I didn't really know how to run it and replaced it with a Torp 19 and went flying.  The engine got out of my hands and I would like to have one back.  A while back my friend ureelybob put a NIB one on ebay.  I bid $150, and it went for $400.  He put several more on, with each one going higher; last one for $800.  I don't think I even got in fast enough to bid $150 on any of the later offers.

How do they out bid you with 3 seconds left at 4:00 AM ?

They do that with "AUTO SNIPE" programs.  They are rigged to automtically beat the high bid by the lowest permissible increment.   I guess if several of these were focused on the same item, it would be HAPPY DAYS for teh seller.

Of course, auto snipe generally has an upper limit.

But what if a Cox Sportsman-powered Piper Commanche (NIB) was up for auction and Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and the Walton brothers all wanted it?
