How to remove the spray bar on a Fox .15 Baffled engine?
« on: April 23, 2013, 03:20:18 PM »
      Hi:

I have a blocked hole in the spray bar of an older Fox .15 baffled engine.  I am going to attempt to remove the spray bar but first I would like to know if it is pressed into the engine. There does not appear to be any hex heads or flats or threads  on either end of the spray bar holding it in place.  I think that some of the Fox .15 engines had a hex head on one side and a nut on the other to tighten the spray bar in place.  The engines that  am repairing, do not have any form of a fastener.

Any thoughts about removing this spray bar?

You might be able to clear the blockage with a torch tip cleaner.  I have done so in the past, might give that a try first.

The tip cleaners can be bought at any welding supply business, and some auto parts places..

  Good luck..

    Hi Bootlegger:

It is the hole in the spray bar that directs fuel into the engine.  I do not have access to this  hole until I remove the spray bar.

I have never tried this, but: make a hook in a piece of music wire, and see if you can reach into the venturi, around the spraybar, and poke the obstruction into the spraybar, then flush it out with fuel?  I suppose I'd use 0.025 or 0.020, to be sure of being smaller than the hole.

Or, remove the needle, hold your finger over the hole, and force some fuel into the nipple?  If the booger isn't completely dried that may push it out.

Or make a little right-angle bend in some music wire, remove the needle valve, and poke around trying to find the hole to push the booger out (and into the venturi, unfortunately).

I don't like pushing out pressed-in components.  It seems like I can usually get them back in correctly -- which means that sometimes I can't, and then I'm bummed.  So I usually only do it as a last resort, or under the direction of someone I can blame.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I have a Fox 15 slant plug baffled engine and the spaybar was pressed in. I removed it and installed a Fox 35 spray bar and needle. Works just fine.

     Hi Jim et. al.:

Yes, that is  the engine in question! How did you remove the spray bar? I was thinking that I should heat the case prior to attempting to press, "pound out" the spray bar. Perhaps I should try to use my drill press as an arbor press to remove the spray bar.

      Suggestions?

Do not use any kind of torch.  That thin alloy does funny things when heated.  If the needle is going to be replaced and damage doesn't matter, you can drill through it in small steps to relax the press fit.  Drill toward the center from both sides - the drill bit will most likely walk out of the spray bar.

the drill press arbor setup will work to press the spraybar out ,put a scratch mark on the case and spraybar ,to realigne , But first i would remove the needle valve and atatch a fuel suringe and see if you can SUCK the blockage back out

Fill the spraybar with penetrating oil and let it soak for 24 hours. You should then be able to use a syringe with fuel to force the crud from the hole. Make certain the crank intake hole is closed off when you do this to prevent any crud from entering the engine.

The above is good advice, and just take a piece of masking or electrical tape and wrap around the drive washer and front of case to keep the intake hole closed off.

It has been a while since I removed mine, but I think it was already loose and the needle and spring was pulling it out. So I just pulled it out the rest of the way and replaced it with the Fox 35 unit. It did not take much to pull it on out.

I tried the filling of the venturi with a solvent but the solvent rapidly drained out of the venturi and into the crankcase.  I doubt that the seal around the crankcase/crankshaft is "water tight"!

Has there been anybody out there that has been able to keep a solvent in the venturi for a long period of time? If so, how long?

Can you just soak the whole engine?

News Flash

I took the spray bar by striking it firmly with a plastic dead blow hammer!

The small hole in the spray bar was packed with a black substance that came out when prodded buy a straight pin.

I assembled the spray bar into the case with the same hammer.  The only thing that holds the spray bar in the case is a very fine straight knurl on the spray bar.  Crude but effective!  I have other n.v.a. for this engine but they are a bit too large to enter the case.  These are held via a hex on one side and a nut on the other.

The Magnum .15 engine has the same mounting hole spacing as the Fox so that is a possibility.  The Magnum produces about twice the hp as the Fox.  Can one say a very fast Acrobat or Shark .15! Lol
