Fox 35 and 3 blade props
« on: May 02, 2015, 01:11:34 PM »
I have a Fox 35 on my Super Ringmaster.  The plane I bought used, the engine is new.

I have a ground clearance problem with the 10-6 prop that is recommended, even on pavement.  On grass, even close mowed a 9-6 pop is also too long.

I would like to try an 8-6, 3 blade prop, but don't want to hurt the engine.  I was given a couple of this size, "Zingali" nylon props.  If this won't work, what size should I put on it?

I don't want to mess with unsoldering the wheels, or cutting into the fuse (although my pilot is mooning everybody because he popped free)

Master Airscrew makes a three blade 10-5, that actually pitches out a bit less. I would try that cut down to 9" if that will give you good ground clearance. They make some 8 inch three blade  props also, and worth a try of they are no more than 6 inch pitch indicated. They wil;l probably be lore like a 5" pitch and you can repitch them. The Zingali props don't get much use from my memory. I think they are pretty heavy and really thick.
I have an All American that i fly with a 9-6 APC that works pretty well. Have you tried that?
   Good luck and have fun,

Right now I have a 10-6 two blade cut to 9-6 and I can take off of pavement.  I normally do not have access to pavement.  I cannot get a takeoff roll on grass with the cut down prop, it hits and stalls as soon as the tail starts lifting.

Sounds like the 8-6 three blade won't hurt the engine, but the run may or may not be what I want.  I'll bench run the prop and see if it acts reasonable on the Fox.

These two props were on the OS25LA's I acquired a couple years ago.  I have the spinners somewhere too.

Zingali props are apparently the same as Zinger

but these are a filled nylon product, not wood.

Larger diameter wheels are the classic solution for this problem. Others to lay down some old carpet, wood or even cardboard to allow the plane to get some speed before it hits the grass, bending the LG legs closer together will often yeild a 1/4" or so, or if it not a pristene plane, just clipping off the wire and wrapping and soldering an extension to the lower portion. If the engine and prop combination are working I would hesitate to change it before trying one of these fixes.  8)
