Glow plugs for Brodak .40 ?
« on: August 05, 2007, 12:41:03 PM »
Hi ,

I've been breaking in my Brodak .40 and it's a bearcat to get started .
I'm using Fox standard long glow plug(s) lit by a Dubro 1.2 volt Quik klip .
Once the engine is running , it seems to run well ( about 12,300 in the 2-4 break , according to my tach) .
The fuel I'm using is a 10% nitro and 18% synth/castor blend , with a castor supplement I added .
Any suggestions for easier starting . Hotter glow driver , or plug(s) ?

Thanks
Rob Killick , MAAC 33300

Rob: I use Thunderbolt R/C long plugs # 115493 (Hobby People or your favorite source). You need a 1.5 volt starter battery or glow driver. I know your in a remote location but you'd be better off with 10 % nitro and 20 to 22 % oil 50/50 castor and syn. Eric at RSM has 10/22 is what I use and my Brodak 40's run great on it. It might be hard to start because of the lower voltage of your glow driver.

Good Luck

Once it is broken in, it will be a lot easier to start. At the beginning they are very tight and as a result, hand flipping often isn't enough. I think the B40 has a steel washer between the prop driver and crankcase (just look), so I would go ahead and use an electric starter if you have it.

I use the Thunderbolt plug in my inverted B40 with 1.2 volt nicad battery, Powermaster 10/22, Zinger Pro 11x5, choke 4 times, pull through 4 times, connect battery--starts with 1 or 2 flips, with model sitting on the wheels.

Hi Rob, I dont have any experience with the Brodak 40, but I will bet you any hot plug will work, Sig, Thunderbolt 4cycle, I think Randy Smith might have something else that would work. It should be a HOT plug though. Also you might try the 18% oil alone without adding castor. More and more people I know are turning away from alot of oil. The days of the fox 35 are gone. The Brodak Should run just fine on 18% oil. Half synth. half castor.

Boy not sure I or anyone else running Brodak 40's would agree with the 18% oil comment.. Why don't you pick up a Brodak 40 and let us know how well it does on 18% oil. It is a bushed engine not BB and the days of the Fox 35 are not completely gone, at least 20% 50-50.

Rob, most of us have discovered the Brodak starts much easier (especially when new) using a back flip.. Get a bump so you know it's ready to go then just smack the prop clockwise against compression. It will backfire and start the right direction almost everytime. If it doesn't it is either flooded or too dry..

If I am correct, I know of two people running 18% in their Double star bushed engines and if I am correct the Brodak 40 is made by the same person who makes the DS. I know of another person running 18% in a PA, but I dont know if it is ball bearing or bushed. If I was going to run a Brodak 40, I wouldnt hesitate to try 18%. All of these people went to 18% because they are getting better engine runs.

For what its worth I have found
the SIG HOT R/C Plug to be ideal
in both Brodak 40 and Double Star 40
Fuel wise 11% castor/11%klotz,5% nitro
for the Brodak was spot on,once you have
some run time on it the Brodak will start much
better.
Works downunder.

My Brodak 40 has been running fine on Powermaster GMA 22 blend, with an 11x5 Zinger. I use a backflip inverted start, like someone said, four prime pull thrus, four flip thrus, attach my Nicad, one back flip everytime. I will say it needs a slightly hotter plug so I am back to a Thunderbolt R/C long. I really never start it other than on the airplanes back. No Issues other than with a stooge and I havent done that with that airplane. The B-40 is an excellent $100.00 motor. A real big step up from a FOX 35.

I've been breaking in my Brodak .40 and it's a bearcat to get started .

This is normal. It's very tight for the first dozen runs.

I'm using Fox standard long glow plug(s) lit by a Dubro 1.2 volt Quik klip .

This should be fine. I've used OS A3's during break-in and it was starting just fine.

The fuel I'm using is a 10% nitro and 18% synth/castor blend , with a castor supplement I added .

This is fine too. I suggest you look at other factors: loose backplate or head screws, NVA hole location
