Gloto Diesel Conversion.
« on: June 28, 2020, 12:46:27 PM »
Hello from North Yorkshire , England.

Anyone converted a glo to diesel ?

Years ago , I purchased a diesel cylinder head to fit an O.S. 40 FP.
I have just used it on a Tower 40 glo , which I’d converted to C / L use. It fits a treat.

With the Tower 40 being an ABC / ball race engine , what props’ do you reckon would be suitable ? 11 x 6 ?
I know diesel isn’t too popular over there but nonetheless any contributions would be appreciated.

Robin.

      Hi Robin:

If that is a Davis Head, I have news for you.

I truly enjoy my Davis Diesel head on my LA .40. The engine runs great. I use a Master Airscrew 11x7 and 11x8. I have installed a 12x6 on it with good results as well. I've been using this setup on a regular basis  now for about 6 months. I have used several Davis Diesel heads over the past few months and I have nothing bad to say about them. Good quality and ease of use.

Frank , good morning .

The diesel head is blue coloured. I think it is a Davis Diesel head.
What news would that be please ?

And Kenneth ,

Thanks for the info. What RPM’s would your LA40 turn an 11x7 please ?

Robin,
I think you have a MECA head not Davis (Davis is out of business, he passed on a few years ago). With the ABN set-up you can run a bit more kero than with the cast iron as you need heat to get it to the running fit. Somewhere around a 10 1/2 x 6 - 7 prop should be a good starting point, they do like to run up the rpm. For fuel you should use something like 25% ether, 25% (75/25) Syn/castor and 49% kero, 1% ignitor. I use a very simple blend of 2 parts Starter Fluid (with 50% ether), mixed with 1 part mineral oil and a splash of Amsoil cetane booster. This is good for general flying and is easy to get in the US.

Let us know what ship you will be using it in and how it works out.

Best,   DennisT
