Enya differences for stunt 45-50 size
« on: May 02, 2014, 02:39:31 AM »
I'd like to get an Enya engine for stunt, something that works well and does not require a whole lot of modification, but it does get a bit confusing. Fuel will be 80/20 no nitro or 5% nitro - whatever is locally available.
So far I have seen the following recommended:
50CX
SS45 stunt
45 6001 model (which turns up now and then on ebay)

Does anyone have an opinion on what might work well/better and why?

Neil,

For my money I'll take the Enya 60 III 7033. They are usually cheap on the "Bay" and can be drilled (the dimples on the exhaust stack) to except an OS 873 or 3030 muffler. The new (replacement) CC come drilled.

Don't get one with the rotating exhaust plug as you just have to machine plugs for it.

Good luck, Jerry

PS: they work well I the ARF/ARC Strega

The 6001 model .45 is older but a really good engine.  You might consider it a direct replacement for a ST .46.  However I don't know how it is without nitro. 5% is fine.  I like the ss.40 pretty well but never tried the .45 or the 50cx.  I'd also say the .60 III would be fine.

I have a 45 6001 and a ss45 s.   I find that the ss45 is a little more
powerful than the 45 6001 but the 6001 is a bit smoother running.
Both are great engines that work right out of the box..

One of my flying buddies recently bought a brand new 45 6001 direct from Enya.  Not sure if they have more stock or not.  Send Ken Enya an email, that's how my buddy found out about it.

thanks for the information gents, very helpful. I'll send Ken Enya an email and see if there are still some 6001's available.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is the SS50, which is an engine I've yet to hear a bad word about. I don't have one myself, but everyone who does seems very happy with them.

There are a few versions of the SS45 - the SS45 Ring-S, which is ringed & plain bearing; the newly-released SS45S, which is lapped and plain bearing, and the RC version which is ringed and 2BB. I picked up a NIB RC one for a song and converted it with a Pro NVA. Haven't flown it yet, but it's running beautifully on the bench, and weighs the same as my SS40.

As Dave says, the .45 6001 is a very nice ST46 substitute. They were superseded by the 6002 many years ago, but Enya did a limited edition rerun a couple of years back.  It shouldn't be too hard to find a decent 6001 on ebay. The still-available 6002 has timing which is apparently more suited to RC, although I know of at least one flyer in the UK who has used the 6002 successfully for stunt.

What we really need is for Enya to run off another batch of the 40XZS.  This is a lovely stunt engine which has the power of a .45 - .50 but only weighs a bit over 8 oz. I'm still kicking myself for only ever buying one of them.

I used a 45 6001 for many years and it was faultless with 75/25 all castor fuel. Several fliers (Peter White for one) asked me how I got it to run as well as the ST 46 and all I could say was I filled the tank and flew :). Mine was the early twin ringed version, later one was a single ring. I bought a 45 6002 when they first came out in about '72 but didn't like it because the run characteristics were quite different to what I was used to so I went back to the 6001.

Early versions of the 60 model 6003 came as either CL or RC and the RC version had the exhaust drilled for a baffle. The 60-IIIB never used an exhaust baffle and had a single ring (which prompted the change to a single ring in the 6001). A bit of a trap though with the 60-IIIB is that a few came with the drilled exhaust because Enya were using up the remainder of the 60-III crankcases so the only identifier is the single ring.

I have to agree with  Steve, the 40xzs is a great stunt engine
right out of the box.

Of the new Enyas discussed here the only one available now is the 50SS.
You can get it from "The Control Line Store" on eBay.

If you want to run 6 pitch props in 4-2-4 I suggest you get the old cross flow engines like the  Enya 45 6001, 45 6002 and 60III

SS40/45/50  will run better with APC or CF props with 3.5 to 4.0 pitch. I like to run them around 10k rpms on the ground. This way it develop tremendous amount of torque.  If you run these engines blow 9500rpm they will work OK but not as powerful.  The SS45 and SS50 with an APC 12.25x3.75 will work quite well in .60 size models

Here in Brazil we have people using SS45 and SS50 in Thundergazer/SV-11/Legacy.

I was given an old ringed Webra 10CC baffle piston engine (pre-'speed' series) that I'm keen to try one day, so the 60 size Enya is perhaps not needed. The 40 XZS looks very nice but seems no longer available, but I will keep haunting ebay just in case!

I received a reply from Ken Enya (love that I get a reply from the name on the brand) and the 6001 is indeed available and costs 11,000yen.
