Enya .09 RC For Airplane
« on: November 25, 2016, 06:16:38 PM »
Hi there. Quick question for those more knowledgeable than I. I have an opportunity to pick up an old Enya .09 RC engine and was wondering about an airplane for it. Mainly, I was wondering if it would do alright in either a Ringmaster Jr., or a Sig Akromaster? I am waiting to hear back on it, but would lik eto know if I am wasting my time or not. Thank you in advance for your time.

And the only funny thing is that the exhaust is on the wrong side! I could make a tongue muffler if I have to also as there is no provisions for an exhaust.

It appears that I missed out on it. Apparently it sold last night. Thread closed.

What did it sell for? I would think the Akromaster wants a .15. An 09 would be for something with about 200 sq in wing.

It was a 'lot' of about 12-13 engines all but 2 I believe ran, and went for about $20 CAD, but that was not what they were asking prior to me inquiring. Original asking price was $150 for all plus shipping. There were 2 more involved for that price, but I managed to buy those. On the way to me is a PeeWee .020, and an OK Cub with a missing needle.

I just scored one on Ebay last week for $25 shipped with CL venturi already installed. great compression. and looks almost new!

It threw me off when I seen the Exhaust on the "upside" so to speak lol

If they're selling that cheap I'll just keep mine and make a plane for it.

James, does yours have the single bolt lug in the exhaust? The one I have does, I wonder what muffler fits it. What size is the venturi?

What airplanes, lines, props and fuel would be good for an Enya .09?

MM, I recall gcb mentioning in Brotherhood of the Ring of his Enya .09 powered Ringmaster Jr. He was flying on 42 foot lines. I don't remember if it was the III or IV. Sceptre Flight has Peter Chinn's engine article on the III. http://sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Enya%2009-III%20CL%20&%2009-III%20RC.html

It speaks of both CL/FF and RC versions.

Regarding Chancey Chorney's photo, looks like an earlier Enya .09, may be the II. http://sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Enya%2009-II%20RC.html

RC version has a touch less HP at 0.118 at 12,750 RPM whereas the III TV RC version is 0.16 HP at 14,500 RPM. The CL III has more power, uses a venturi insert that can be removed for even more power as the article states. RC carb mounts right on top of the non-removable CL venturi.

I've flown the Enya .09-III TV on RC with Tatone 09-19 Peacepipe muffler on an old 41" wingspan Hobby Shack Cessna 180 ARF foamie originally for .049 reed valve. Was a definite upgrade, really moves out on a 7x6 wood T/F prop on 15% nitro glow fuel with 25% oil. Found that needle settings were less critical with lower inertia wood props. Don't know if that might be related to the muffler I'm using, as I don't have the OEM muffler.

The threaded hole in the middle of the exhaust port is for the baffle plate linked to carb for the RC version, to give it a more reliable idle by providing back pressure if muffler is not used.

Got a couple CL version .09-III's, but been dragging my feet in getting their airframes completed, so have nothing to report there.

I have flown jr flite streaks with fp15s and enya 19s. The fp15 streaks were overpowered great fun. The enya 19 powered streaks not so fast. Kinda doggy. Both needed considerable tail weight for trim. Recently I purchased an 09 enya. Much lighter than either engine. I suspect it might be a good match to a jr streak. No tail weight. More moderate power. The jr streaks are similar in size and weight to half a models. On 45 foot lines or so, I think an 09 enya jr streak would be interesting.

I've flown my Jr Streak with an Enya 09 in it, and really liked it. It was exactly as Dennis suggests - no great hot rod, but balanced nicely and was very enjoyable to fly. Feed them at least 10% nitro, if not 15, they like it.

Mine is a Enya .09-II. No holes or anything for a muffler or baffle.  Will get pics uploaded as soon as Tapatalk wants to work again on my phone!

Still like to know how big the venturi needs to be with spray bar.

MM, according to the link in my reply #7 regarding the Enya .09-III, the article states,

Quote from: Peter Chinn, Nov-66 MAN
The new front housing has a substantially larger bore intake (0.276 in, instead of 0.228 in.), which, allowing for the 4 mm. diameter spraybar, means an increase in choke area of over 100 percent compared with the 09-II. As supplied, the 09-III is equipped with an intake restrictor, but even with this removed, there is still sufficient fuel lift to permit the engine to be run on normal suction feed.

That said, I've never mic'd mine to be sure. (I've seen typos in magazine articles before.) The venturi insert restrictor appears to be made from a thin sheet of spring steel. If you are thinking about removing the restrictor and installing a venturi stack on top, there is an Enya .09 Quickie venturi that shtterman on E-Bay has, but I'd ask him it it would work.

I'm going back to re read the article as i thought it said you could remove the carb and use it as is then. So now  back to reading.

Chancey, based on your photo, your Enya .09-II can be used as is, it does not need a venturi stack mounted on top of it. I've bench run my .09-III and it runs fine as is. Some have advised me to mount the engine on the left side of the fuselage, so the exhaust is pointed downward, and keep tank location on the right. I'll know more when I actually run the thing.

I've got a 36" span Sterling P-38 profile kit that I was going to use my two .09-III's on. Been dragging my feet these past 2 years, as been involved with volunteer work. Have some reluctance on the landing gear of it. They simply sandwiched it in balsa on the fuselage (2 3/16" balsa sheets glued together to hold the wire and wing similar glued to ribs.) I fly off a mixed field, take off paved RC runway but part of the circle is over rough field scrub plants. Am always straightening the gear on my Ringmaster Jr. May be if I flew off a paved circle might feel different.
