AVIASTAR .53
« on: October 15, 2008, 07:34:08 AM »
Here are some photos of the first pre-production prototype of the .53 based on my input and testing.
Photo #1. The dissassembled photo shows the head mod with a .070 squish band.
Photo #2. The comparison shows the final version of the head along with the stock head. The final version has a .040 squish band that tapers upward 5 degrees towards the combustion chamber. (I was surprised at what an improvement the taper made).
Photo #3. The venturi that came with the engine was too small (.24) and too long.
Photo #4. Final version of the venturi.  .348 diameter.
Photo #5. Ready for the preferred NVA and glow plug.

The engine weighs 12.2 ounces with my mods but minus the NVA.

I will bring it to the Huntersville contest and I have no intention of taking it home with me. I have no interest in the large size engines so someone else will take it home.

There are a few technical issues that I will discuss at Huntersville if anyone is interested.

So, all the heads (46, 53, 61) that Brodak sells will have the hemi style head and not that teeny combustion chamber stock config?

Look forward to seeing the motor at the contest y1

Hi, Steve - unfortunately, I cannot say if they did indeed follow my suggestions.  ??? ??? ???
The head work really made a difference and I forwarded all the info to them, emphasizing not only the chamber diameter but also the taper.

I need to see some production engines.

When you see the .53 this weekend, you will immediately notice that there are NO name or displacement markings whatsoever.
Only "MADE IN CHINA".

Maybe you'll take it home!!!  #^ #^ #^

Bob,
it would appear from looking at the specs for the three motors, they perhaps are all built using the same casting for the crankcase. I am pretty interested in the .61 size. DO you know anything about this one?
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Hi, Mark - you may well be correct regarding the casting but I'm not sure.
The only Aviastar I've ever seen is the .53.
I will visit John in November and I'll check out the others.

I loaned the prototype 53 to Tom Weedman and he tested it quite thouroughly.

Seems to be a real powerhouse yielding some very good stunt runs.

I will publish Tom's report and photos in the next CL World.
