ASP / Magnum 52 modifications for stunt?
« on: January 25, 2016, 12:34:11 PM »
Hello all,
I am just looking at an ASP 52, it seems to be a touch on the heavy side, but it looks as though it might well be worth while modifying this unit for stunt use. Has anyone any experience on this engine? Apart from changing out the R/C carburettor for an NVA and using a lightweight tube muffler, is there anything else that needs doing?
I have heard that the ball races are not good quality, but for the time being, I intend to leave them alone as this engine has just about settled down with maybe an hours or so running time and they feel silky smooth. There is only a little tightness at the top of the stroke, which you would probably expect after a little running.
I would think it would run like an LA 46 with maybe the same 12 x 3.25 APC prop or maybe something a touch larger on diameter. I am not a fan of heavy props, so is there something in wood at similar dimensions. maybe I should look at the Xoar site, although I have yet to find it.

Thanks,

Andrew.

Thanks Mark,
Looks like there are one r two props listed that could haul the coal. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Andrew.

I modify and sell  the Magnum Blue head 52, I have sold quite a number of them, they will turn a 14 x 4 pretty easy, so I would not use any 2 blade less than a 13 x 4 or 4.5
The engines have a lot of power.
WAY more power than any LA 46 puts out  so try a 13x 4. or 13 x 4.5

Thanks for that information Randy, a 13 x4 it is. Snag is I will have to build another plane to go with it.

Thanks again,

Andrew.
