Another K&B 61 Question plus Webra 6.5
« on: July 11, 2007, 08:39:14 PM »
I have a coule K&B 61 engines and would like to put them into CL service.  I'm curious what those of you that fly with a 61 have done to prep the engine.  Is there any blocking of inside ports, what size venturi, and have you added head spacers...or anything else?

I recently found a Webra 6.5 (40) engine.  It's not a "Speed" model and has a piston baffle.  The engine is reasonably light and from the looks of it, would make a very suitable CL engine.  Any advice on use and setup of this engine?

Thanks for any and all help....Thomas

Hi all.
My KB 61 works very well with .300 venturi and Bowman ring (stock ones didnīt seem to seal very well).
Letīs hear other opinions.

Regards.
Manuel.

Hi guys, I send my K&B 61 (R/C) to Frank Bowman. He rebuild it using his ring and new bearings also made a venturi for her. I have a veco 61 that he did the same. They both run great 4-2-4 runs and I don't believe you have to do any special modes. I've read on this forum where some have order a ring from Frank and did their own work. I wouldn't have a clue how to work on these engines. I have seen a lot of people screw model engines up.   Good luck and the K&B 61 is a great motor, all that needs to be done is to make sure the head has a good seal, Gary

Hi Tom,

The K&B (Veco 61) and the new "Gold Head" both run very well for Willis Swindell up in Norfolk.  It is VERY similar to a ST 60 run wise (might weigh about an ounce more) and he likes his.

My brother ordered one of Mecoa's K&B 61 engines and does it run well. Darn thing started on the first flip, just opened the needle valve two turns and away she went. Bench ran the baby several times, believe she's ready for his Strega. Held the nose up, for two cycle run, for about thirty seconds, sit her down level and man right back to four cycle. She was four cycling at 8200 rpm's, don't want to tell what she was doing in two cycle mode. If your not a top ten flier, a K&B 61 for around 100.00 dollars and a Strega for around 150.00 wow, you would look pretty good, for not a great amount of money. Don't forget your K&B 61 probably weighs an ounce more than the hot dog engine for $$$$$$, GUESS, YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF IF YOU HAVE THE $$$$$$. Don't take it serious just having fun, Gary

Gary,

Did your brother buy the Twist Head 61 setup for control line that MECOA sells?

Hi Tom, no my brother bought the control line K&B 61 and it turn real nice rpm's. Turning 8200 rpm's and still in a real nice four cycle, turned nose up she was talking hard, set her back down and she drop back into nice four cycle. I was afraid running her on the upper end of the four cycle she would just go into a two cycle and stay there, she didn't. People are missing out on a nice engine. I believe you should get a tongue muffler for them, because of the weigh. RSM and several others sell one at a reasonable price. I've been flying mine without a muffler but they are loud, going to get one. Willis flys with these engine and does well, have a nice day, Gary
