3 bladers for LA .46

Well, search does no good for me on this one.  :'(

Who uses/has used a 3 blade prop on the LA .46?  MAS makes 10" and 11" (the 11" comes out to about 5" pitch on a Prather Gauge).

Gotta be someone out there! ;D

I used several cut down Gator props on the LA, mostly using a 10.25x3.75 3 blade.  You could get props from people who had buzzed their prop on their 61 or 65 and clean them up for the LA.

master airscrew has cheap 3/blades have a 12/6 on a s/t 51 that works good

Bryan Carr in Calgary likes the 10-5 MA 3-blade on his Magnum XLS .36. I have not tried one, but if it works on a .36, it won't work on a .46. You might try the higher pitch versions. I know of a .46LA that used a 12-6 MA 3-blade that was cut down to 11.5". I don't know if he did further rework or pitching, but it did work very well, flying a USA-1 that was over 60 oz. Can't recall the guy's surname. Wade, I think, was his given name. From Central Calif.

Sadly, the MA 3 blade props are pretty expensive for "shot in the dark" testing, at around $10 each. They can be re-carved, re-pitched, and sanded into something different, but duplication becomes a problem.

You might try Randy Aero's "Magic" (Mejzlik) 10 x 5.5 (?) 3 blade scimitar electric prop. Being CF, it's plenty strong and stiff for IC engines. Keith Varley uses one on his Stalker .51 powered Sawyer "Continental". Pitched down to 4.5" or 5", it should work fine on the .46LA.  D>K Steve

For awhile, we used a Bolly 12-4.25 cut down to 11 inches. We stopped using it because the engine cut out at the bottom of the square 8 resulting in an inverted landing and breaking off one of the blades

I used a hand made 3 blade wood prop that Alan Resinger made. Made from Zinger blades, they are 11 x5 props (I have a couple of them). Worked pretty well with both the Magnum 53 and the OS 46LA

Hi Bill,

I've been using a MAS 12x6 3-blade cut down to 11.5", and repitched to 4" at the tip with the .46LA/tongue muffler on a 48 oz Pathfinder II  profile.  seems to work quite well!  H^^

Thanks, Guys! 

I have some of the MAS 3 blades in the shop so I will give them a try.  I also have a few of the "buzzed props" so I guess just testing is the way to go.  I have been hearing and reading all sorts of things (so I pinned the "Set Up" post to the top) about what pitch to run.  Seems a lot of fellas run a low pitch (4" or less) yet others run 5" pitch. 

We will be setting it up to run in the wet 2 mode, not trying for a 4-2 break.

Just a note on the pitch:  Because the MAS prop has the Phillip entry, you will have to repitch the prop to 3" pitch instead of 4" on the Prather gauge for wet 2 runs.   The 4" mentioned above is for a 4-4 to 4-2 runs.

Of course, Master Airscrew makes 3-bladers in various sizes.  They work fine if your plane is tail-heavy!  These things are HEAVY!

I find that they are not much heavier then the APC 12.25x3.75 or APC 11.5x4 (see below) but they are heavy comparing to the MAS 12x6 wood prop tho.

APC 12.25x3.75   1.55 oz


APC 11.5x4   1.41 oz


MAS 3-blade 12x6  1.58 oz


MAS 12x6 wood   .63 oz

For me he LA46 seems to like to run at higher rpm's-  10400 or so in a 4cycle. 
to get this the MAS 10-5 3 blade needs to cut down to 9.75-9.5 in. diameter. 
this set up uses the stock muffler, since it seems to act a bit like a tuned pipe.

a 10-10.5x4 wood prop seems to work similarly, at the cost of a bit more vibration

not sure I have heard of anyone running one at 10400! around these here parts most everyone is running about 9600 to 9800 and thats with a 3.75 pitch prop, I have yet to find a use for the MA props,, they seem rather inefficient ,

HI Phil,

It would seem that the 10" or 10 1/2" props are a bit small for the .46, and especially the 9 1/2" 3 blades.. ???  Just curious as I do not have a LOT of personal experience with the .46LA yet.  From a 12 1/4" down to a 10", or less, seems to give up a lot of "disc"....

not only that, but one of the keys we found with the LA 46 is the load from the prop, it really wants a substantial load to help regulate the run properly, or at least that is our observation

That was my experience also with the LA.46..  actually, it has enough power to turn the full 12x6 (pitched to 4") MAS 3-blade with good speed regulation and no sagging through the Sqr-8 & OH-8 in the pattern.  H^^

Mark,
Scott Reise was flying his new Pathfinder at Stuntathon using an LA46/Macs muffler/3 blade prop combo.
He launched at around 10350 rpm.It sounded like a regular piped engine and ran well.I think the prop
was about an 11.3/4.2 bolly type carbon.
