Hornet Combat Plans
« on: December 10, 2016, 08:26:56 PM »
Once upon a time way long ago I learned to fly Combat with one of these designs. Anybody out there have plans for this plane or know where to get them? Would like to find a set for a good friend who wants to build one!

Barry Baxter has plans for a Midwest kit if it's the one you want.   http://www.controllineplans.com/

Good looking airplane. Have never flown one, but they look like pretty good performers.

Bob,  just came back from the museum posting that the link took me too.  Sure brings back a lot of memories to this old man.  Wad so thankful that I got to meet your Dad at one of the combat contests at Tuscon before the VSC champs.  Maybe one of these years I will make it out to see it in person.

By the way guys if you want to revive memories, go to Barry's site and look through the plan listings.

I've purchased many sets of plans from Barry. His service is a life saver for old combat guys!

At this years GSCB combat festival we had two Hornets in the air. Mine has a McCoy Lightning Bolt 35 for power and hit a top speed of 93 MPH and is a fun plane to fly. But be warned the plane likes to go inverted as soon as it is hand launched. No matter what I did it went right into a inside loop. The other Hornet shared the same flight characteristics. I would make the plane extra nose heavy until you get a few flights on it.

I've had a lot of the combat wings that wanted to do that if you were not on your toes.   That is why I launch from the side.

In built two Midwest Hornets in the 1961-62 time frame.  I won my first combat trophy with one, based on a better pit crew, not a good-flying plane.

I built the second Hornet on the theory that I must have screwed up on the first, but the results weren't much better.  From then on it was Voodoos, Combat Cats, a Wasp, a Big Iron and Sneakers.

I sell full size .pdf files of Hornet plans. I also sell laser cut Hornet kits. My plans and kits are designed to eliminate the Hornet problem of losing the outboard half of the wing.
