Covering material clear/ colored for fast Combat ships
« on: August 28, 2011, 03:35:44 PM »
Bought a few old combat planes in decent shape. Covering on one is real bad.  Looks like one of Chek made models. Other one is a foamie with holes cut into wing and covered in trans. blue. What do they use now?? Planes will not see combat but need to be strong. I know monocote and foam don't work. I have used econocote before. What is SLC ?? I went to corehouse site but did not see it listed. Thank you for any info.
Cheers,Dan    H^^

Dan, I use it mainly for the same purpose as your looking to do. If you click on Phil's pricelist it is about mid pageCOV-1

Sample

10 ft.
6 oz. shipping is included in price

$6.00

COV-2

Roll

100 ft.
   l lb 5 oz.

$35.00                It is pretty neat stuff, Ken

Thank you Ken,
Sent Phil an email. Does this stuff need its own seperate glue like balsarite?? Or is it like monocote with its own glue?
Cheers,Dan

HI Dan,

SLC has the adhesive on it, and I don't add anything extra like Balsarite.  The temps to attach and shrink are low enough to not harm the foam.  I have even used it on a big stunter as an under layer for the silkspan on the open bays.  It works great for that, being much more puncture resistant than straight silkspan.  It also doesn't take as much clear to seal the silkspan so extra weight is negligible.  It is "paintable", also.

So far I have really liked using it!

You will find SLC is easy to work with.  This is a model of the reduced size Sneaker.   Fox 15 Schnuerle for power and it flies great.  Henry Shun out in Hawaii hand cuts kits for this and other.   Lists them on the bay.   I will have to find his ebay moniker.  Oh the plane is covered entirely with SLC. Hey Doc,
Is that your AMA # ? Mine is 23528. Covering looks great. Tried to email Phil but no reply. Is he another one of those vendors who don't follow up on orders?? I hope not I know he has been around for awhile. Just want to get these ready to rumble. Combat ships fly good and stack up taking little room. Does Phil have another email besides one listed on his catalog?? Thanks,Dan   S?P

HI Dan,

While Phil has answered my emails, I just call him on the phone number listed in his web site.  Very quick service!

I have sent three emails and nada. The local guy I got some combat stuff says he has some SLC and some fas-cal.  That should be good for now. Most online vendors are fast to reply.

OK Doc,
I got some covering from friend but he was almost out of SLC. The small piece he had looked good. He gave me something else and have patched two other planes. I need to completey recover the third combat ship. I'll give Phil a call and order some SLC.

I know that it's probably just me, but I would MUCH rather call to place an order than to email about it.  Phil has always been super cool on the phone.

I'm on vacation until next Thursday.  Please save call until then.  Dankar, I don't recall seeing any emails from you.  They may have gotten screened out by earthlink for some reason.  I have gotten a number of virus laden emails lately that got disappeared.  To be honest, I don't religiously check email every day although I try to keep up.  The last few weeks it has taken a back seat to production work.

Phil has always been super cool on the phone.

Even the time when I got confused about time zones and called him at 3 AM his time.  Phil is a good guy.

I sent order for some SLC. Bought some from a friend and used it. Went on nicely and looks good. The foamies and heat gun are a no-no. you can damage a plane real quick. Lucky I took it slow but did bogger a couple places.
Dan

SLC arrieved from corehouse. Glad to get it, and hope Phil is able to get back into product production.
