COMBAT GRAFFITI/ 2016
« on: November 22, 2015, 01:06:20 PM »
Pictures of two of the originators of Combat Graffiti, Ken Burdick and Greg Davis. The site is a small field in Salmon Arm B.C. near Greg's house. Aiplanes are Half Fast 3, WOW!, and per Combat Streak. (all scratch built) and silk and dope finish.
We are planning a picnic event this year in Vancouver B.C. July 9th. I'll promote on Flying Lines.

Ken
brother I met you and think a fondly each time I see Flying lines and G Pape or you pontificate on combat planes....big grin
You create some cool assed airplanes and I am copying you and a few other nostalgia combat freaques....Like A Ming, R Wooten, B Hunt, M Londke, B Mears, J Welch, H Rush

Please consider morphing your Graffiti event and BBQ with the bladder grabber first week end Aug....there is plenty of room for both

Building a BIG OTTO 1/2a today
Waiting on more silk and dope for some others....Mongoose, Demon, Sneaker
Need to get off ass and frame up:
Big Iron  (thanks John Knoppi)
Nemesis  ( thanks Pat Johnston and Howard)
Challenger ( thanks Gordon Delaney)
Winder, VooDoo, (Thanks John Knoppi)

I forget all the other kits heading my way

Got a few Texas Slow (Phil Cartier) to get finished as well as a RST needing some more bench time

who was it got me building a widow Satan?

Then there are all the old skool engines I got this winter needing to teach me what they need to live and breath fire....

this crap is ALL your fault with the Graffiti videos making me hard...ah er firm--ly desiring to relive those years

wow!
Thanks Fred, I had no idea. I sent Adrian Duncan a write up for his column on how combat G got started. It didn't have much interest in the Seattle area, but did in the Vancouver B.C. area....I think there is a greater diversity of u/c fliers there, so that's why it began and is still there.
The Grabber is what's left of it all....full on 328 event and it should remain as such in my humble opinion. The antique stuff is just for appreciation of the times and models. My original question to all time great combat flyer Greg Davis was this. "Do you think there are master modelers who would build these oldies if they didn't get destroyed?" It went from there.
Build those old wings...make em nice.

Ken that was a great response and still has me in a quandary... on my first Bladder grabber I met Jeff Rein and he said... "when we die so does this event"

I have been twice in the last three years , missing one year because of the motorcycle accident

I never ever competed at that level and the first Grabber was such a adrenaline rush and so fun to just pit, watch, cajole, talk @#$%...let Buzz Wilson or others know he/they were full of it, appreciate the effort Jeff and others like Mckay's wife Roberta does for the event---- I don't see how I can miss the final days of the Grabber....we all know it will die soon with less and less participation

Latter I found your combat graffiti wonderfully done videos and as a old fart, got the groove with the music, hot rods, and bad assed airplanes...all adrenaline builders and I desperately desire to re-live those moments....and the big plus is there re several events such as graffiti with nostalgia and fun for all

Alas I did good in life, and have a bit of disposable income to enjoy what I desire...but two back to back $1000+ trips to northern Wash are out of the question

So I have a compromise....mostly.... Your BBQ and Grafitti  event will survive as planned...but please do bring some of your old skool planes down for the 2016 grabber so I can see, touch, ask questions and keep on track with my efforts

Two demons, 1 Mongoose, 1 Lil Satan, and 2 Big Ottos and one scratch build self design 1/2a stunt plane, all in the finishing stages have me spraying and brushing Nitrate and Butyrate Dope all over inside and outside

Some are silk/dope
Some are Polyspan/dope
Some are 100% plastic
Some are Plastic over Polyspan

I have even been doing/planning the Bob Mears/ Gene Pape SLC/Doculam back side painted method

Nemesis, Sneeker, Challenger, VooDoo, Winder, Big Iron, and a bunch of Brodak 1/2a planes are all in the too do list

I am old skool guy and my only digital camera sucks at photos so that is why none of my posts are Build Blogs or show progress like many of you can do

I am curious that Andre Ming and a few others have not posted....considering how stoked they were last year with the various nostalgia combat events they attended

I keep saying "never again" but when I build the oldies it always seem to come down to silk and dope. Greg Davis made a beautiful finish by using ployspan covered with silk-span and then dope and poly - U overcoat.
His and mine are shown in the picture. His is front row stunt quality, mine is otherwise.

Ken, I just finished a kit built Jr. Satan. Waiting for the chance to get 'er up. We have had blast of real winter here. Nothing fancy. Polyspan and dope. G-15. 14oz! Some of my .35's are 17oz! Still, it looks cool. I also have WOW. K&B Green. Sometimes it is "WOW which way is it going!"  Will try some noseweight.   TS

that WOW!  actually won the combat graffiti  event last time (white with blue model) It isn't in the same class as the one next to it, but I won every flying match. The scale and finish points just squeaked me by for an overall winning score. Some don't like the rules because they are not typical of other combat events, but it keeps the models and the hours and hours of work safe.
On my Jr. Satan, I used a 1" square leading edge and a better airfoil, then carved the more blunt L.E. The actual airfoil is from the Mono-Boom.....go figure. I first did this on the Dominator D-bat, to try to get it to fly better....it did. The d-bat has a rectangular L.E. by adding 1/4" to the 1 x 1, but did not add to the Satan's L.E.

The latest combat G project.....a Sweet Sweep. Not so sweet to build, but the kit is great. So far, it's straight.
The proof is in the launch.

Green silk and white trim....it's doing the 30 day Rustoleum dry cycle then a top coat of min wax. It might even fly!

Hey Ken, If you are going to fly it, the 30 day rustolium still wont be fuel resistant, so don't try it. What you can do that is working for me is a coat of polyurethane over the rustolium. So far that seems to hold up well.

Ken

It always has a lot of entries wherever its offered. Airplanes and engines are readily available. They're easier to carry and/or ship. 10% fuel cost less. Same setup flies two or more events. F2D is growing where fast is shrinking......Obviously the way to go. I've switched to single airplane F2D at the Lubbock contest instead of Fast2D, and that has really been a hit. Its much closer to the old slow combat. You get a full 4 minutes of combat. Fast rules, the match is usually over in 30 seconds or less. Single F2D has much more air time and 60% of the rules are eliminated without the second airplane.

it makes the most sense to me, for what I would want in a match anyway.
The N.W. see's it otherwise but I'm having a good time making silk and dope antiques. Thanks again for pitting me in my last f2D go.

I'm eat up with these friggin' Nostalgia planes. I've got a fleet now of a Raunchy, Nemisis, Winder, Slingshot, Sweet Sweep, Demon, and a Vampire, to actually fly. Plus I have the same ones in the museum too. And I aint got no place to fly them! I fly the Tucson event in January and thats it. I would love to come to your event, its just so damn far away.

It was a hoot. Each year, we try to find the most obscure combat model in the pre 1964 era. Well...Barrie Hobkirk came up with one that is a jaw dropper. I won't say what it is, because it's his find but you'd never believe it. It describes it for combat only on the box and no place else. Wish I had found it myself, but there is no way I would have suspected it or seen the box.

Good luck on your event, I will wait in anticipation of the pictures. BTW....I think the best flying model there was the Blitz.....we just couldn't get the Fox to run slow enough.

Thanks John. I looked over the build notes on Walter's site. His warnings about wing warps and such are kind of scaring me away a bit but I'm going to keep it in mind and make a decision in the fall as I'm heading into the building season.

Matt. It's a good fear to have! I built mine pretty straight but warped it with silk.......Once you get the construction going, it's not so bad to build. All is built around the plywood box center section.

Just follow Walters build notes and you should have no problem.   It was the King Sweep I had problems with even trying to follow the Sweet Sweep construction method.   They are both better flyers than the pilot.
