Combat at the Huntersville, NC May 5 & 6 2012 Contest
« on: August 22, 2012, 12:36:18 PM »
Modified by Howard Shenton from Phil Cartier's post at the MACA site

Sponsored by the Metrolina Control Line Society(MCLS) and run by Howard Shenton in conjunction with multiple Stunt and Navy Carrier events, this was a fun meet.

12 entries, including Howard Shenton, who has made some real progress recovering from multiple major surgeries and health problems the last 2 years. Howard managed two flights before getting laid low by the canned air horn. Just a little safety note- the circle marshal should keep all the equipment(air horn, watches, mat, etc. under control). In this case the contestants wandered outside of the circle in a line tangle a few feet. Just as they were about to get untangled Howard stepped on the air horn can and fell down, causing a real mess. Fortunately he wasn't hurt, but it could have been bad. I had left the can in the area when I finished marking the center circle. Senior moment! mw~
The 12 entries was the most contestants we have ever had at any of our contests.
My thanks to all who showed up and competed.

Mext contest at Huntersville, NC is October 20th & 21st. Speed limit & Vintage or 1/2A (Pilots Choice)

SPEED LIMIT
We flew double elimination with a 75 mph speed limit, and no AMA midair rule. The weather was generally nice, but unsettled. Surrounding thunderstorms threatened rain and caused quite a few bursts of heavy gusts. The wind really played havoc with the guys trying to fly 15 powered F2D models on 60ft. .015 lines. They had real troubles with upwind performance. I didn't keep track of midair's, except to note there was more than one. Don Stoneman and Phil
had a wing slap head on pass that left three prop cuts in Phil's foam wing and blew out an outboard panel on Don's plane. Didn't really affect the flying, but Don gave up some airtime with a cut apiece. The final three ended up with Bobby Wallace and Don Stoneman, 1 loss apiece, flying each other. Don pulled out a win when Bobbie hit the ground and couldn't get back up. Don and Phil flew the final round 6 (5) match with a lot of flying in gusty wind. Phil got up a cut, late in the match, and had a line tangle when a gust blew Don's plane in. Phil  ended up in the ground with well under a minute to go.

VINTAGE COMBAT
Sunday three guys flew a couple of vintage combat matches. Bill Duane had a brace of AMA Fast Splinters(Bill Netzeband design), Howard had a couple of Nemesis, and Bobbie Wallace and his dad flew a Demon. The highlight of the event was when the Demon, after hitting the ground once, lost the engine in midflight. The motor mounts came loose and it snapped the engine restraint.ne restraint
