Very simple request.
« on: December 20, 2011, 09:36:46 AM »
Hi All,

A very simple request that many will know the answer for!

I have a Brodak Profile Shoestring (Goldberg remake) and I want to recreate my original one.  This means I need to know the mixing formula for the "Chartreuse" found on the old Goldberg plans.  Brother Marvin Denny told me but I forgot and lost the paper I wrote it on.

I *think* it is 8 parts Cub Yellow and 1 part Cessna Green.  Verify, or correct it, please!

THANKS!

Bill, HighPlains, a poster on R/C UNIVERSE says the old dope formula is 9 parts yellow to 1 part green. I don't have the plans, so I can't confirm.

I know you asked about a different kit, but the Berkeley kit plans for mixiing AeroGloss for their Shoesting is, as from the plans:

"COLOR SCHEME

"Chartreuse and red as indicated by color separation lines.

"Chartreuse can be mixed from 1 part of fuelproof Cessna green to 6 parts fuelproof Cub yellow."

My memory is a bit shakey on this after more than 50 years, but I remember this was a close match to photographs of that original color scheme on the full size Shoestring.

I will try to post some color pictures of that original paint scheme of the full size Shoestring that I have in my file.

And here is another one.  From my perspective, the original Shoestring chartruese is a vary pale yellow green, tending to be more yellow than green.  Some of the models I have seen over the years seem to have more green than the original.

Regarding these two pictures, I do not think the colors have been washed out much if any in the reproduction process or from their age.

Good luck.

Keith

Bill,  First...OOPS ! I guess I didn't proof read my reply very well. HighPlains said 8 parts, same as you did, not 9. Sorry! I searched and found Bill Morell's SHOESTRING STUNTER post where Chris McMillin (Reply #31 on January 30,2008) said the SHOESTRING was 1949 Cadillac Chartreuse. Here's the chart and an enlargement of Chartreuse. Hope it helps. John

Thanks, All!

As Keith said, my original model was much "greener", I just mixed yellow and green, probably not to the formula.

I'm inclined to agree with Keith's description of the green colour.

I've described it as the colour of a lemon just as the colour starts to change when the fruit starts to ripen. Years ago—I wasn't 10—my dad brought home two promo model Cadillacs that he had been given in his work for a GM dealer. One was a pink, early fifties convertible, the other was a pale yellow/green convertible described as I remember.

The pic below is a first generation copy, that came via the Society of Air Racing Historians from, I think, the original photographer, Aaron King. I hope it helps.

Remember the red was described as Chinese Red but all the Chinese Red that I have seen is darker than this.

Then you have the old Sun/Shade deal. Check out the color on the rocker panels on the one in the sun...

Well, sooner or later I will have to do like Randy and Mark and get the toners with out the carrier and mix it in with some clear dope.  Maybe the '49 Cadillac Chartreuse will be the first color I do this with.
