Super Clown plans
« on: November 27, 2012, 06:03:19 PM »
Hello all!

I am new here, made an intro in the 1/2A section seeing as I do mostly 1/2A. I wanted to branch out into some larger models and was hoping someone had plans for the original PDQ Super Clown. I have been searching for a while and have yet to find a set.

I know Brodak sells a kit, but I like the PDQ version better. I also heard CLC makes or made a faithful reproduction of the Super Clown, again a search has found nothing.

If anyone has plans or a kit for that matter let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Ron Cribbs

Ron,

Barry Baxter (http://www.controllineplans.com) has plans for the Super Clown and the accompanying photo appears to be like the PDQ version (no wing spars).

Thanks Gary,

I was hoping for a free set, but may just have to bite the bullet and stop being cheap. Those are the plans I want though for sure.

Go to Barry's site and browse.  You may find some other plans you can't live with out.  I have a few of his plans and have  built from them.  Order from him and help him keep the designs/plans going.

Hello Ron, I like the PDQ version better too. I have built and flown the CLC/PDQ and the Brodak version. They fly the same. Flaps or no flaps. The CLC plans that Barry sells is easy to scratch build and no wing spar to mess with per the original. Richard

The original PDQ Super Clown, as re-issued by CLC (no longer in business) is the ONLY true Super Clown.....unlike the later versions with wing spars and LE sheeting.  Photo shows a CLC version in 1994.  For a TRUE Super Clown, get a set of plans from Barry Baxter.

Hey guys,

As luck would have it, I happened upon a CLC kit for $50. Does that sound reasonable? I do like scratch building, but cutting ribs is a PITA! So the kit will speed up the process. I am about to undergo a scratch build of an S-1.

If it has full size plans I will get them copied for anyone who wishes to have them.

It doesn't pay to have plans copied and send 'em through the mail.

Better to get a download, put it on a flash drive and pay the local copy shop $8 to $12 to print it.  Getting plans for free is tough, unless the owner works at a place where he can scan, print, and mail at no (the employer's) cost.

I guess some people have a hard time getting their head around paying for a download, but somebody is providing you a service.  You still save a lot by cutting out the mailman.

I was a bit miffed by an Ebayer who sold plans on a download-only basis, then had the nerve to add in "shipping & handling."

I guess I should have been more clear. By copied I meant converted to PDF.

The CLC kit for $50.00 is a great deal, I would go for it! The Super Clown with out flaps flies like a Ringmaster too. Richard

CLC is still a valid business. Jim Snelson run's the shop here in Albuquerque. He has a website under J & J Hobbies and then Control Line Central. He's quite busy with working a regular job and family life and then running the shop on the side, but he's a good guy and still around. Great products and very knowledgeable fellow.

The 'CLC' I was referring to in Post #5 is 'Control Line Classics' - a firm once owned by Tony Drago - not affiliated with Jim Snelson's 'Control Line Central'.

I received my CLC Super Clown kit. Pretty simplistic, but also very cool. It does have very nicely drawn full size plans. I would like to have them convertd to PDF however, are there any legal issues I need to be concerned with?

Ron,

The answer to your question is....not unless someone takes you to court....whiich is about as likely as an S-1 Ringmaster winning the Walker Cup at the Nats in the summer of 2013.  In other words, it ain't gonna happen.......  LL~    LL~    D>K    H^^

.

No doubt you meant to type 2013, not 1013....a bit of a stretch there.

Thanks Terrance,  well I guess I will make the plans available should anyone wish to build a Super Clown.

Mike, I forgot to comment on your post above, very nice Clown. I have to ask though, what in the world were doing in Kuwait? And flying for that matter?

Ron: I was there as a civilian contractor to the US Army, 1992-1999 as a member of Base Security, Camp Doha, ten miles north of Kuwait City.  Some very good friends, Tony Drago and the late Dennis Lien, mailed me some kits and related supplies....Ambroid, sandpaper, etc.  The Super Clown was one of Tony's CLC kits.  On leave home to Arizona I packed a couple of McCoy .19s which caused a ruckus at London's Heathrow airport on return because the X-ray machine alerted Security to the possibility of 'grenades'.  (A bit of excitement there until I opened the case and showed the SMG-toting guards that all was well.)

A friendly Colonel (base commander) and my civilian boss okay'd the use of one of the heli' pads as a flying site.  Prior to that, I'd flown in the parking lot of the local Kuwait Power & Water Company.

That explains it. I figured either military or contractor. Seeing as you weren't in uniform though......

I spent some time in Qatar in '96. 137 days. That was long enough.

Looks good Richard,

A very nice scratch build. I am unsure if I want the flaps or not. I only fly 1/2A currently and nothing with flaps so I don't know how they fly. I do have a 1/2A Stork with flaps so maybe I should finish that first and then decide.

Here is a video of me flying it. Go easy as I am a newbie. I have a little over a year of CL under my belt.

I love the way it flies!
