Playboy (I-Beam) ?

Hi ,

Several years ago , Bill Sawyer offered an I-beam kit , called The Playboy.
Can anyone tell me if it was Bill's design and if plans are available ?

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Hi Rob,

The Playboy was Norm Whittle's model.  Bill made up the kits and it is a great looking I-Beam.  I have a kit that Bill and I assembled from parts that he would not put in the kits he sold.  A blemish here or there in the wood, etc., and I have not built it YET.  The original was powered by a McCoy .40RH.  I have a George Aldrich McGas .40 to use in mine. (George's remakes of the McCoy .40RHs)

There is a photo in this forum , holding his plane , albeit , both wings are broken off .

Somewhere I saw a photo of it and him in an old magazine.  I saw it at one Nats somewhere too.  I didn't really know but I thought it was his design.  Last time I knew of him he was trying to sell his property in Florida ( with hand sodded flying circle).  Long ago.  Gave the mag collection away so can't find the photo (sigh). :((

The Playboy design was an I-beam designed by Jim Mayfield of Garden Grove, California @ 1965. The basic look was admired and copied by Tom Warden in his Continental/Manado models. They look similar but aren't the same.
Jim designed a D tube wing for Norm Whittle to build for the '68 Nats. I had the Bill Sawyer Playboy kit but sold it off, it was a very complete and highly pre-fabbed  top quality kit.
Jim's was powered by a Fox 35, Norm's a McCoy 40.

A friend of mine has one of these kits....it looked excellent. We just pulled it out and gave it the once over at the table a few weeks ago. Really nice plans and such a gorgeous classic looking model too! I may try to buy it. ;D

This is my Playboy built from Bill Sawyers kit. It flies ok but it's heavy at 50oz. I replaced the FP40 with an LA46 but haven't tried it yet. I just sort of moved on.

Hi Chief,

Unfortunately, Bill was given bad information about the I-Beam.  He was told it was made of ply.  I could not convince him otherwise!

I shoulda built a new one for mine. Didn't seem that heavy at the time.

I think Jim's weighed about 40 oz. He was a super weight concious modeler. I think he only used Elmers for glue.

Well, a lighter beam may be in order. I watched Billy and Bob do up the Ares beam on video when we still all had VHS at home a few years ago ;)...pretty sure that can and should be replaced....
