Ok, new project finally started.
« on: February 03, 2008, 10:27:00 PM »
A friend of mine talked me out of the Bernie Ash ship. At least for now. So it went back on the shelf and I started a new classic plane. To avoid a lot of flak, I'll keep the identity secret for now. Maybe Bill Sawyer is rubbing off on me.   ;D

Right now I'm just laying up a bellcrank and setting up a new mold for a landing gear. And I laid out the fuse sides and stab and choose some wood. When I have something to actually show, I may post some pictures of the progress.

Randy,
If it is the "Ballerina III", I hope you use the bubble canopy, like on the actual "Ballerina III".
While Charles Lickliter's drawing pictures the bird cage, his actual "III" had the bubble. The "III" was featured again in FM a few years ago, and you can still get a copy from FM.

It shows that incredible cockpit, that inspired so many of us. That picture alone is enough to turn you against painted cockpits!

Clint, You'll just have to wait.

John, Not on your life.

Tom, Nope. But it's a good flier. Even already have the paint scheme figured out. I hope that by the time it's framed up that the weather will have changed and I can finish both it and the new PA plane.

Dave,

**Hint***  Not a Jetjob.

And how right you are. Luckily, I did manage to do some orgainization so finding something just takes some thought. The one thing I haven't gotten used to is I moved where I had the trash can. I've thrown at least 20 dirty paper towel on the floor, letting go before I remember I moved the can. Sheesh!

How's the Ringmaster comming along? ;D

Kidding.

Is it a Palmer, Trostle, Southwick, or Mackey design?

Clint,

No Ringmaster. Perhaps a Ring Monster.  If it helps, it's circa 1968 or 69.    ;D

I did manage to cut out the carbon cloth and set up the molds tonight (what a slight sidetrack to start putting things together that I will take to Tucson and a bit of drawing on the next PA plane: The Sumthin Else.

Wrong again. Not big (except in attitude). 57" wing span, under 600 square inches.

Hmmm...... sounds like an Adamisin design.

I started a Classic model that has a 57" ws, WAY less than 600 squares, and NO FLAPS......

It's been so cold here, I haven't been able to work on it much. Hopefully, I'll get some time this weekend. Man, getting up at 5 am is starting to blow.

OK, another clue. It's designed by an east coast guy. The original competed in the Nats at one point.

There, that's two clues.   8)

OK, I give up. I have no idea which designers are from the east coast and TONS of models have competed in the NATS. I found over 60 (before I stoped counting) models mentioned on this forum in the past month or so.

I'll have to wait for the grand announcement.

WHAT!? All that work trying to figure out which really obscure model you're building and the answer is a Shoestring?
Wish I'd thought of it.

Clint,

Hey, what can I say. I was going to go for an obscure model, but the Shoestring will be the quickest to the tarmac. I already have the templates and molds ready to go. And a much more reliable power plant. Should be able to have it framed up in 2 or 3 weeks, then I can finish it and the new PA plane more or less at the same time. Besides, the thing flies pretty well.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a pretty whacked idea on the drafting table right now. It will probably be next up.

Hi Arch,

Well, there's a time to be conventional and a time to be, well, unconventional. As I noted, the next will fall into the later category.

Oh, by the way. Just to keep the Mountain Mafia off my back, I plan to put on a real canopy this time. Turns out I actually have a perfect fit in my stash (I'm something of a canopy collector - never know what you might need). I have some pictures of the cockpit from the Shoestring called the Spud Runner (a paint scheme I really like), so hopefully, I can copy at least some of it. That and a dark tint to the canopy should do the job, just like the original, though I plan to copy the canopy on the Spud Runner instead of the Flying Models plan just because I think it looks so much cooler. But the shape is the same so no deviation from the plan shape. Hope to get the carbon gear and bellcrank laid up tomorrow. I've had the molds ready for a week, but it's been too cold and I couldn't heat the shop up enough after work to do the deed.

Tonight I got the fuse sides ready for assembly and am working on the engine mounts. Also got most of the tail plane ready to frame up tomorrow. I plan to build up the tail surfaces instead of the original solid sheets. Also got the flaps started and started cutting ribs out. That's fun. I'm using the original Flying Models plan form, but the airfoil from the Skylark so it should match the original more closely.

I'll take some picture when I get a bit further along.

more typos ... sheesh!

Trust me on this - your knee caps will thank you!

Good idea on the canopy stash - I'm finding myself canopy-starved, cannot find a replacement for the long canoy "DuBro(?) used to make, I also used some Graupner Cirrus (sailplane) canopies - can't find anything like that either.

Good luck with the 'Shoe, and keep up the pix!

Dennis,

Try this:  http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJ932&P=7

Also, just go to Tower and put in "canopy" for the search criteria. I've bought maybe 20 canopies from the list. Many are very cool or specific application.

That one is cool, Donaldo.

And for really close to Formula 1 type canopies, try Sig;

http://www.sigmfg.com/cgi-bin/dpsmart.exe/MainMenuFV4.html?E+Sig

It seems they got their start with the Berkeley canopies from the old Shoestring and Minnow kits, as they are very similar in shape.

Hi Randy,

Glad to hear you're doing another Shoestring.  This one will be better than the first!

BTW:  I broke out of my funk tonight!  Spent several hours on a new Classic ship myself.  One I have had gathering dust for a LONG time.  I am changing it (exactly like the designer did) from another Classic plane.  With most of the parts made (wing and fuselage) it shouldn't take too long.  Got to redo a couple of areas, but they won't be hard.  It IS tough to cut into stuff and redo before you ever get it finished, but it will be worth it.

Bill,

I posted some early pics of the Shoe over in the building thread. It's nice getting back into a building mode again. I need to rest up for the major painting mode when I have to do two planes at once. Yikes!

Got in some more gluing and cutting.  it's all starting to feel good again.

Also did some work on Aaron's *Strat* guitar body.  Doing it in Sonic Blue (a Fender Custom color) and am almost ready to clear it!  He got a custom neck from Fender along with all the attendant wild electrical pickups and such..........

Bill,

I refinished my son's Gibson SG awhile back. Easier than your work with the Fender since it was just clear coat. Man, that guitar cellulous clear is interesting stuff. Got a pint of it straight from Gibson. Had to do some restoration work on the body prior to refinishing, but is sure sounded nice in the end. Cost of parts for a guitar built in 1966 can be a bit interesting, but was worth it in the end. Interesting experience.
