Made 1st three flights on my new Olympic today. PJ inspired Stalker51 for motovation. Real happy with the run. Using RSM 11-6 prop,
launched at 8250 rpm. Does most of the maneuvers in a fast 4-cycle, couple of small blips into a 2-cycle. Did not put a stop watch on it, but I'm thinking the laps were 5.3~5.4 on 61' lines e2e. 4oz of Morgan 10% C/L blend gave a 7:10 run time. Couple of minor trim issues; wing leveling and tank adjustment, but its looking real good so far.

Its one of the original Gold Head versions I got from Stalker-MODUSA back around 2000.
I also have a little newer version (2006) with silver head as a back-up.
Thinking about building a Big Job with the Silver Head for OTS

Several items where I took some liberties.

Removable Rudders. I did this just to make it easy to do the checks on the inside of the rudders. About 8 years ago I built a Jr. size Profile Olympic by reducing the plans from this Brodak kit down to 75% I think. I painted a 3by3 Black&White checkerboard on the rudders, but on the outside only. I always told myself if I ever build this kit I would put the checkerboard on both sides.

I extended the cowl further aft than normal to cover the gear mount. I also made a custom mount to support rear of muffler.
Used a piece of aluminum angle and rubber grommet which fits on the tube stub that some of the older style Stalkers have.

I made a removable tailwheel section which doubles a weight box. But the Stalker engines are light for their size and also have longer noses which pushes engine cg aft. That along with the rear muffler being closer to cg I did not need any tailweight. CG came out .25" behind design. With the tailwheel removed I have ability to remove and adjust pushrod length if needed.

Finish--Polyspan on wings & tail, silkspan on the rest. Randolph clear dope tinted with HOK Kandy Koncentrates. I had yellow and red tints left over from two previous jobs. Mixed them together for the orange tint. Thought it would take equal parts of the 2 tints for the orange but it was more like 5~6 yellow to 1 part red. Silver lettering and canopy is Rand-O-Fil, underneath the orange tint it looks more like a gold. The Rand-O-Fil is marketed as a UV barrier, its clear dope with aluminum powder, but driers looking just like a silver paint.

Weight--49oz I was initially a little disappointed with that, was shooting for 44~45. But after 6 flights now I'm happy with it right where it is. Its solid in level flight, tracks good in the rounds, and still has a decent corner. So I'm thinking the extra five ounces that I would have liked to avoid, might actually give it some added stability when its bumpty out there.

49 ounces is a PERFECT weight for that wing area and a 51 in the nose. With five ounces less that ship would have been a kite in a windy day.

You were spot on with the CG lcoation - that should be a KILLER combination.

Sorry Allan - is it Stalker .51 or Stalker .61?

Its if the .51 - great, but just for arguments sake you should get a .61 and bolt it in - same mounting holes, only 1/2 heavier.. and double the power.. - Will make your olympic into Usain Bolt!!!!!!!!!

On the Rand-O-Fil, did you experience any problem with it pulling up when masking? De-laminating?

I dont think the 51 and 61 share the same bolt pattern. Reason I say that is the 51 has same bolt pattern as the 40 RE. I already had the fuse built with the mounts drilled for a 40 which I was planning to put in it when I read about you with the 61 in the GeisekeNobler. So I checked and found out the 51 would drop right in. The 51 was about 1/8" longer to the prop hub, so all I had to do to use it was put on another nose ring to fill the gap.

Bill: I only used the Rand-O-Fil for the lettering shadows and the canopy, both of which were sprayed last. So there never was any point where I had to put tape on top of the silver.

Allan - you could be correct. I'm not 100% sure either..

I know the .61 - .61 LS - .76 - .81 all share the same bolt pattern.

Still stunning, its a winner in my book.

Its a Bolly unit, pretty sure I got it from Randy.
I cut the opening in the legs because it was a lot stiffer than it had to be.

Thanks for the info on HOK Kandy Koncentrates. I am out of the analyn dye that I have been using, and will look into the Koncentrates. Looks like they have a good varity of colors that will look different depending on the base coat under it.

Again, your airplane is beautiful. The new finishes have raised the bar extremely high.

If I remember right , the cheapest price (online) I found for the HOK Kandy Koncentrates was $28/8oz can.
Sounds expensive but thats enough for 6-8 planes.
I used something like 1/4 ~ 1/2 oz to tint a 20oz dope mixture.
There are other brands (likely cheaper) and I am sure they will work just as well.
I recently noticed they also have a 2oz package (around $8) which I dont think was available when I bought mine 2 years ago.
That should be enough for one maybe two planes.

Tom,

You have to experiment with which to use to get what effect. Pete Peterson uses Kandy Koncentrates for transparent finishes. He discovered that to get the yellow he wanted he had to use Lime-Gold Koncentrate. It's the effect of the color of the balsa showing through the Kandy color. I used Pagan Gold over balsa to get a sort of chrome yellow color.

Will be in Baton Rouge next weekend, family is getting together for Mother's Day at my sisters house.
If the winds dont blow too bad I will be at the field Saturday afternoon to do some flying.

Made 2 more flights today. A little closer with the trim, maybe one more small adjustment with trim tab. Developed problem with tank or plumbing, had to abort 3rd flight, could not get a steady needle setting on the ground. I am starting to see some of the good stunt run I have been reading about on these Stalker 51's. Cant believe I waited so long to get one in the air, had it since 2000. Hoping I can get it all sorted out in next 2 weeks and be ready for the Atlanta contest.

Make sure all the bolts and stuff are tight. I was about se on the needle on my Thunderbolt last week, when after the horizontal eight the old Fox went what I thought was super rich. Once it was on the ground, discovered two engine mounting bolts completely gone and the other two loose. The cowl is all that saved the engine from leaving the plane.

Allan did a great job flying his "Olympic" at the Dallas contest. It is a great flying airplane and gives him a two event airplane... Classic and Advanced. This is one reason to build a good Classic.

We are encouraging Allan to fly both events at the Nats.
