That is either Les McDonalds early Stiletto or a Chris Lella design. ;D

Actually  Keith  got  it,  This  is  the  1970 Stiletto  by  Les McDonald, It was years later that Remel  built  them.
It is very interesting, this  ship  won the  1970 KOI, and  had  an 18 inch  tail moment, with  square  tips on the wing  and  stab.
It also  looks  to have  a  full width  turtledeck  instead of the  later  version with the  small / thin deck topped on to the  fuse.

Also another thing I didn't realize  was  that  the  Tropicaire (a 1971-72 plane by Les)  used this  first generation Stiletto  wing in it
I will try  to  get  some  picture of this  one

Hi Randy,
What would be the chances of you selling plans for for this Stilleto and the Tropicaire in the hopefully near future ? I can almost  hear guys out there already saying " Please!- Please"-" huh -huh!"  Anyway, it doesn't hurt to ask and it should be a good addition to your list of offered plans.
Randy I hope you have a great evening,

Hi Pat

That is a possiblilty, Les just sent me a package with the marked up plans to the  Tropicaire  ( the Tropicaire is a much modified Formula S with a 1st gen Stiletto wing in it), and I would really like to build the  First gen Stiletto.
It would take a little while to put the  plans together  and  draw them. I of course  will let you know  how things progress.
These are  2  airplanes that interest me personally.

Randy,

If it won the 1970 KOI, then it must have existed before 12-31-1969 Right!  Since it probably did, it makes
this airplane a "CLASSIC" design.

lnless he was really, really fast in the building process from January 1, 1970.

At least I brought up a name many have not thought of for a while, actually I remember his daughter or two more than I remember Remel.

Randy,
Jim Pollock brings up an important question...

If it won the 1970 KOI, design and construction - not to mention the occasional practice and trimming that Les sometimes did (YeeHAW!) - suggest

THAT THIS MODEL IS CLASSIC ELIGIBLE BY THE 31 DEC 1969 CUTOFF CRITERION!!!

Further discussion? Does Les confirm, specifically, that it was there during 1969? Any pictures? Color schemes (he did beautiful work - the 1973 Stiletto set a standard of beauty we still enjoy...)

Some KOI's have been in January and some have been in December.

HI Lou

I think the  1970  KOI  was  started in December 30th 1970 and  ran untill  January 1st  1971. Les has told me that the design was not built before Dec 31th 1969.  I am trying to get photos of this  first  version

I will let  ya  know  what I find out

I drove to the Lexington contest this past weekend and Kenny Stevens brought out of his van a Les McDonald Stiletto which I think was the published version from around 1973.  Les had given the model to Wynn Paul.  I was thrilled to have the time with this still pretty plane.

Go to the other Stiletto thread for five shots of Les McDonald's 72C Stiletto.
